Overview

A cargo van is a light commercial vehicle built around a steel unibody rather than a separate chassis: the floor pan, sides, and roof are welded into one load-bearing shell that doubles as both the structure and the cargo enclosure. That construction keeps the load floor low and the kerb weight down, which is why cargo vans dominate parcel delivery, trades, and mobile-service fleets. Ahead of the bulkhead sits a two-seat cab; behind it is an open, fully enclosed bay reached through twin rear barn doors and a kerb-side sliding door. Buyers choose between a gasoline engine for lower purchase cost and a turbo-diesel for fuel economy and torque on heavily loaded routes.

How it works

Power comes from the front-mounted Engine, a four- or six-cylinder unit fed by common-rail diesel or port gasoline injection and kept cool by a front radiator and coolant pump. Its torque runs through the Transmission, a multi-speed automatic with a torque converter, then down the Driveshaft to the Drive Axle, whose hypoid final drive splits drive to the rear wheels for traction when the bay is full. The Suspension uses MacPherson struts up front and leaf springs at the rear, the leaf packs handling the variable payload without sagging.

The driver works from the Cab, which carries the seats, steering, and a Dashboard with a digital cluster and the body controller. The load space is the Cargo Bay: a bulkhead seals it from the cab, while floor and wall liners and lashing rails protect the body and secure freight. The Sliding Door rolls aft on three rails so it opens fully even when parked tight against another vehicle. Braking is hydraulic disc at all four corners with ABS in the Brake System. The Electrical System system runs lights and accessories from a battery kept charged by the alternator, an underfloor Fuel Tank supplies the engine, and the HVAC unit heats and ventilates the cab.
