Side Loader Refuse Truck Product
Overview
The side-loader garbage truck is a fully automated refuse collection vehicle designed for efficient kerbside bin service in residential and light-commercial areas. The truck features a hydraulic-powered articulated grabber arm mounted on the side that autonomously lifts and empties standard waste bins (120 L or 240 L) into an elevated hopper. From there, the refuse travels through a compaction chamber where a reciprocating packer blade compresses the material into a large body (18–25 m³) before transport to landfill or transfer stations.
First introduced in the 1990s in Germany, side-loaders have become the dominant collection method across Europe and increasingly in North America. The automation eliminates the need for collection staff to manually handle bins, reducing labour costs and occupational injury, while the side-mounted configuration allows the driver to remain in the cabin during the entire pickup cycle—critical for safety in street traffic.
Modern units use proportional hydraulics and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to sequence the grab, hoist, and compaction cycles with minimal operator input. Most units require only a joystick command to initiate a full collection; the PLC then manages timing, pressure limits, and interlocks.
How it Works
The cycle begins when the driver positions the truck opposite a bin and operates the joystick to extend the grabber boom toward the kerb-mounted bin. The two-finger claw—actuated by dedicated double-acting cylinders—grips the bin's top handles with up to 7 kN of force, enough to secure most residential containers without crushing them.
Once clamped, the boom lifts vertically, raising the bin 1.5–2.0 meters above the truck body. At peak height, the boom swivels inboard, positioning the bin directly over the hopper. A secondary solenoid valve opens the claw, releasing the bin's contents into the receiving funnel.
As waste enters the hopper, it falls into the packing chamber where a large vertical plate (0.5 m × 2.5 m, hardened steel, 12 mm thick) begins a reciprocating cycle at 15–25 Hz. Dual cylinders with 500 mm stroke drive the blade forward and backward, compressing the incoming material against the body's rear wall. Pressure relief valves limit packing force to 210 bar, protecting the structure and machinery.
Waste is forced progressively deeper into the body until the bin is empty and the claw retracts and opens, releasing it for return to the kerb. The entire cycle—grab to drop—typically takes 30–45 seconds.
When the body is full (typically after 100–120 pickups), the driver navigates to a transfer station or landfill and operates the tipping mechanism: dual hoist cylinders (600 mm bore, 1200 mm stroke) lift the body to a 45-degree angle, rotating around a hinge pin at the body-to-chassis junction. The tailgate swings open hydraulically, and compacted waste slides out via a discharge chute. The body is then lowered, the tailgate closes and latches, and the truck returns to route.
Hydraulic fluid is supplied by a 45 cc/rev variable displacement pump driven off the engine's main crankshaft. A proportional valve block handles directing flow to the grabber arm, packer, hoist, and tailgate mechanisms. Load cells on the hopper and body frame feed weight signals to the PLC, which can alert the driver when the body approaches capacity and prevent overfilling. Pressure transducers and position sensors on each major actuator provide real-time feedback for safety interlocks—for example, the PLC will not allow the packer to operate while the arm is extended, eliminating collision risk.
The operator cabin is typically climate-controlled and soundproofed, with a joystick controller offering proportional speed control for smooth arm extension and compact operation in tight residential streets. Push-buttons cycle through modes (grab, hoist, pack, dump), and LED displays show current operation and system faults.
Subsystems
The chassis is a heavy-duty truck frame rated for up to 27 tonnes GVW, featuring a 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine (200–240 kW) and automatic transmission tuned for frequent stops and load variation. Dual rear axles with portal hubs and air suspension provide the load capacity and ride quality needed for hundreds of pickups per shift.
The grabber arm is the signature component—a articulated boom mounted on the truck's side that extends 2.8–3.2 meters laterally to reach kerb-mounted bins. The boom itself is either welded steel tube or telescopic, with a slew bearing allowing 360-degree rotation. The claw head features two parallel fingers capable of 200 mm opening and 5 kN closing force, controlled via proportional cylinders that respond to joystick inputs.
The hopper funnels waste from the claw into the compaction chamber. It's a simple welded steel cone with a 45-degree slope, allowing material to flow freely by gravity. A manual slide gate permits inspection or clearance of jams.
The packer blade is the core compaction mechanism—a hardened steel plate driven by twin hydraulic cylinders in rapid reciprocal motion. As the blade cycles forward, it crushes incoming waste against the body's rear wall, then retracts to receive the next load. Velocity typically reaches 15–25 Hz, resulting in extreme density and high body fill efficiency.
The waste body is a 18–25 m³ sealed steel vessel with a sloped floor to minimize leakage and aid drainage. A hinged tailgate at the rear opens during tipping. Interior stiffeners resist the immense compaction forces (often exceeding 10 kN/m² during peak packing). A drip tray underneath catches leachate and rinse water.
The hydraulic system integrates a variable displacement pump (45 cc/rev), valve manifold, accumulators, and 150 L reservoir. Proportional directional valves allow smooth, metered control of arm speed and packer rhythm. Pressure relief valves limit system pressure to 210 bar; accumulators absorb shock loads from rapid packer deceleration.
The control suite includes a joystick, push-button selector, load cells, position transducers, and a PLC. The PLC sequences all operations, monitors safety interlocks, and displays diagnostics to the driver.
The tipper system consists of two large hoist cylinders mounted on a reinforced subframe, lifting and tilting the body 45–50 degrees around a hinge pin for discharge.
Applications and Variants
Side-loaders are standard for residential curbside collection in most developed nations. Weekly or bi-weekly pickup schedules in suburban and rural areas favour the 120 L and 240 L bin sizes, perfectly matched to the truck's 5–7 kN claw force.
Commercial variants with higher-capacity bodies (up to 30 m³) and beefier packing systems serve apartment blocks and light industrial estates that generate multiple bins per location.
Some jurisdictions now mandate "recyclables" collection in split-body variants: the truck carries two separate compaction chambers (side-by-side), each with dedicated packer and discharge, allowing a single vehicle to co-collect waste and recyclables in compartmented form.
Electric and hybrid side-loaders are emerging, replacing diesel engines with battery packs and electric motors to reduce tailpipe emissions—particularly valuable in European city centres. The hydraulics remain largely unchanged, though electric-driven pumps allow recovery of regenerative braking energy and quieter operation in residential zones.
Maintenance and Design Life
The principal wear items are the packer blade wear strips (PTFE and polyurethane liners), claw fingers, and hopper gates, typically replaced every 8,000–12,000 operating hours. Hydraulic fluid is changed annually; accumulator nitrogen bladders are replaced every 5 years.
A well-maintained side-loader achieves 15–20 years in service before major overhaul or retirement. The design is robust; most failures are predictable wear rather than sudden mechanical collapse.
Industry Standards
EU Directive 2000/53/EC (End of Life Vehicles) regulates materials, recycling, and hazardous substance removal. UK and US garbage truck design follows NFPA 1901 (fire apparatus) and ANSI standards for refuse vehicle dimensions and safety.
