Curtain-Side Trailer

Product

Overview

A curtain-side trailer, also called a tautliner, replaces the rigid side walls of a dry van with tensioned fabric curtains that slide open along the full length of the trailer. The result is a unit with the weather protection of a van and the side-loading speed of a flatbed. A forklift driver can open one entire side in under a minute and place pallets at any position, which removes the need to feed every load through the rear doors.

These trailers are common in beverage, building-product, and general palletized freight where loads are bulky but not especially heavy. Interior height of 110 to 116 in suits double-stacked pallets, and the curtain weight keeps tare in the 12,000 to 15,000 lb range. The Side Curtain System is the defining subsystem, but the trailer still relies on a full chassis, floor, suspension, and brake set.

Chassis and Floor

The Chassis Frame is a welded steel frame built around two tapered Mainrail I-Beam I-beams. Lateral Crossmember channels support the floor, and a row of Side Outrigger brackets extends past the rails to carry the cantrail and curtain track. The front carries a Upper Coupler Plate plate and an SAE 2 in Kingpin that couples to the tractor.

The Floor Assembly uses tongue-and-groove laminated hardwood Laminated Floor Panel panels rated for forklift wheel loads, fastened down with countersunk Floor Screw screws. A Scuff Band along each lower edge protects the floor from forklift forks and pallet corners during side loading.

Roof and Bulkhead

Above the load, the Roof & Bulkhead carries a series of curved aluminum Roof Bow members supporting a coated Roof Sheet. On sliding-roof models the bows ride on a Roof Slide Rail so the roof can be opened for crane loading of tall items. A rigid Front Bulkhead at the front protects the load from forward shift, and a Rear Portal Frame portal anchors the curtain tensioners and the rear doors.

Curtain System

The Side Curtain System is the working face of the trailer. Each side is a reinforced PVC PVC Curtain Panel hung from a row of Curtain Roller units that run in the cantrail, so the whole curtain gathers to one end like a shower curtain. At the rear pillar a Curtain Tensioner ratchet pulls the curtain taut, and a line of Curtain Buckle fittings anchors the lower edge to the rave. Vertical Tension Pole Pocket sleeves hold tension poles that keep the curtain flat between top and bottom rails.

A plain curtain only keeps weather out. To give the curtain a structural load-restraint rating under standards such as EN 12642 XL, the system adds internal Restraint Strap webbing that ties the cantrail to the rave. These straps let the curtain itself resist a portion of the sideways load from the cargo, which can reduce or remove the need for separate internal lashing.

Rear Doors, Suspension, and Brakes

The Rear Doors are twin Rear Door Panel barn doors on heavy Door Hinge sets, latched by vertical Cam-Lock Bar bars and sealed by a perimeter Door Weather Seal. Rear access matters for forklift loading from a dock when the side is parked against a wall.

The running gear mirrors other dry-freight semis. The Axle & Suspension is a tandem air-ride group with a forged Axle Beam, a Trailing Arm at each wheel, an Air Spring Bellows, and a Suspension Shock damper, with each Wheel Hub riding on tapered roller Ball Bearing sets sealed by an Oil Seal. The Air Brake System uses S-cam air drums with a Spring Brake Chamber at each wheel, fed from an Air Reservoir through a Relay valve, with ABS provided by the Electrical System system and its ABS Control Unit.

Landing Gear and Coupling Loads

When the trailer is parked and uncoupled, its weight rests on the Landing Gear. A Landing Leg pair is lowered by a two-speed Landing Gearbox driven through a Helical Gear Pair lift screw, each ending in a Sand Shoe sand shoe that spreads the load on yard surfaces. The high gear lowers or raises the legs quickly under no load, while the low gear gives the mechanical advantage needed to lift a laden trailer off the fifth wheel. Drivers crank the legs down before pulling the kingpin release, and the height-control valve in the suspension keeps the deck at a constant elevation so the kingpin meets the fifth wheel at the right height every time.

Use and Variants

Curtain-siders are sold in standard, mega (extra interior height with a drop floor), and refrigerated-curtain forms, and the curtain itself can be specified as a plain weather cover or as a load-rated structural curtain that meets EN 12642 XL. Their main advantage is loading speed at multi-drop sites, where opening a curtain is far faster than working through rear doors, and a forklift can reach any pallet position from the side. The trade-off is that fabric sides give less security and impact protection than steel, so high-value or theft-prone freight often stays in rigid vans. Curtains also wear and tear over time and need periodic repair or replacement, which adds a maintenance item that solid-sided vans do not have. For operators moving palletized goods to many stops a day, the time saved at each drop usually outweighs these costs, which is why the tautliner is one of the most common trailer types in European and Australian distribution fleets and is steadily growing in North American regional haul.
