Supercar

Product

Overview

A supercar is an extreme high-performance road car built around a mid-mounted engine and a lightweight composite structure. Performance and handling drive every design choice. The Carbon Monocoque is a carbon-fiber tub that the rest of the car is built onto, and the Mid-Mounted V8 sits behind the cabin and ahead of the rear axle, the placement that gives the best weight distribution and polar moment for fast direction changes.

These cars are produced in low volumes at high cost. They use racing-derived construction methods, materials such as carbon fiber and titanium, and active systems for aerodynamics and suspension.

Carbon monocoque

The Carbon Monocoque centers on a single Carbon-Fiber Tub, an autoclave-cured carbon-fiber structure that forms the cabin and is extremely stiff for its weight. An aluminum-honeycomb Front Crash Structure structure bolts to the front for impact absorption, and a cast aluminum Rear Aluminum Subframe carries the engine and rear suspension. The Dihedral Door units swing upward on a Dihedral Hinge dihedral mechanism, both for access in tight spaces and for visual drama. A steel Roll-Over Structure protects occupants in a rollover.

Engine

The Mid-Mounted V8 is a 4.0 L twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane Flat-Plane Crankshaft, which gives even exhaust pulses and allows a very high redline. The aluminum Cylinder Block holds eight forged Forged Piston assemblies on titanium Titanium Connecting Rod rods to reduce reciprocating mass. Each Cylinder Head uses titanium Titanium Valve units for the same reason. Two low-inertia Twin-Scroll Turbo units provide boost with minimal lag. Because the car experiences sustained high cornering loads, lubrication is by the Dry-Sump Oil System system, which keeps oil pickup fed under lateral acceleration and lets the engine sit low in the chassis.

Transaxle

Power goes to the Dual-Clutch Transaxle, a 7-speed dual-clutch unit mounted behind the engine. The Dual Clutch Pack pre-selects the next gear for near-instant shifts, controlled by the Mechatronic Unit unit. Drive reaches the rear wheels through the Electronic Differential, an electronically controlled differential whose E-Diff Clutch varies side-to-side torque to sharpen corner exit and manage traction.

Suspension and brakes

Both the Front Pushrod Corner and Rear Pushrod Corner use double wishbones with inboard dampers. A Suspension Pushrod transmits wheel motion to a Adaptive Damper mounted inside the body, which keeps unsprung mass low and frees up aerodynamic space at the wheels. The Adaptive Damper Valve adjusts damping continuously for road and track modes. The Rear Pushrod Corner adds a Toe Control Link for stable rear-wheel geometry under power. Braking is by the Carbon-Ceramic Brakes: each Brake Corner pairs a six-piston Monobloc Caliper with a C/SiC Carbon-Ceramic Disc for high, fade-resistant stopping power. Wheels mount on a Center-Lock Nut nut for fast changes and reduced mass.

Aerodynamics and cooling

The Active Aerodynamics system manages downforce and drag actively. The Active Rear Wing and two Active Front Flap surfaces move under control of the Aero Control Unit, raising downforce in corners, reducing drag on straights, and acting as an air brake under heavy braking. A Rear Diffuser works the underbody airflow. Because a mid-engine layout concentrates heat behind the cabin, the Cooling System system uses two side Radiator cores, two Charge Air Cooler units, and four Brake Cooling Duct channels feeding cooling air to the brakes.

Body and electronics

The Composite Body Panels are carbon composite, with a Front Clamshell and Rear Clamshell that lift to expose the mechanicals, plus two Side Air Intake ducts feeding the engine and coolers. The Electronics suite is led by the Vehicle Dynamics Controller vehicle dynamics controller, which fuses inputs from an IMU (6-axis) to coordinate traction, stability, the Electronic Differential, and the active aero. The driver sees a Digital Instrument Cluster and operates controls from a motorsport-style Steering Wheel.

Materials and construction

Every material choice in a supercar serves performance. The Carbon-Fiber Tub is laid up from carbon-fiber prepreg and cured in an autoclave, producing a structure that is far stiffer per unit weight than aluminum or steel. Inside the engine, titanium Titanium Valve and Titanium Connecting Rod components reduce reciprocating mass so the engine can rev past 8,000 rpm, and the Compressor Wheel in each turbo is titanium for low inertia. The Composite Body Panels are carbon composite, and the Active Rear Wing and Rear Diffuser are carbon for stiffness at high air loads. These materials are expensive and slow to produce, which is why supercars are built in low volumes with significant hand assembly. The payoff is a dry weight well under a typical sports car despite the power on board.

How the systems work together

A supercar's speed comes from coordinating several active systems. The Vehicle Dynamics Controller vehicle dynamics controller reads an IMU (6-axis) and wheel sensors many times per second and commands the Electronic Differential, the traction control, and the Active Aerodynamics surfaces together. Under braking the Active Rear Wing tilts up to act as an air brake and add rear downforce for stability. Through a corner the controller biases torque across the rear wheels with the E-Diff Clutch to rotate the car, while the active flaps trim the aerodynamic balance. On a straight the wing flattens to cut drag for top speed. The inboard pushrod dampers keep the wheels controlled while leaving the wheel wells clear for airflow. This integration is what lets the car achieve both very high cornering grip and very high straight-line speed.

Variants and use

Supercars are offered in coupe and open-top forms, with track-focused versions adding more aggressive aero, stripped interiors, and higher power. Some pair the combustion engine with electric motors for hybrid versions that boost both performance and low-speed drivability, and a few use the electric motors to drive the front wheels for all-wheel-drive launches. The car is built for maximum performance on road and circuit, where the carbon Carbon Monocoque, mid-engine balance, and active systems define the experience.
