Hook-Lift Truck

Product

Overview

A hook-lift truck is a rigid commercial vehicle fitted with a hydraulic hook arm that loads, carries, and discharges interchangeable containers without external handling equipment. The truck backs up to a container resting on the ground, the operator extends and lowers the hook arm to engage a lifting bar near the top of the container, and the hoist mechanism drags the container up onto the chassis. Because the body is not permanently attached, one truck services many bodies: a skip for demolition waste, an open-top for scrap, a flatbed for plant, or an enclosed box for recycling. This flexibility makes hook-lift trucks common in waste collection, construction, and municipal fleets.

The vehicle is built on a heavy ladder chassis reinforced with a dedicated hoist subframe. A diesel driveline provides motive power and drives the hydraulic system through a transmission-mounted power take-off. The whole loading sequence is controlled by the operator from the in-cab control panel or a remote pendant.

Hoist mechanism

The defining subsystem is the hook hoist. It consists of a tipping main frame hinged at the rear of the subframe, an articulated L-shaped hook arm, and on most modern units a telescopic slider jib that extends the reach so the hook can engage a container that sits flat on the ground. Two large tipping cylinders raise the main frame for unloading or for tipping loose material, while a separate jib articulation cylinder folds the hook arm to pull the container up the inclined frame and over the rear guide rollers.

The hook arm and slider are fabricated from high-strength quenched and tempered plate (S960QL grade) because the bending loads concentrate at the elbow of the L. The lifting hook itself is a forged 42CrMo4 component. All articulation points use hardened pivot pins running in greased bushings. When a container is fully loaded, locking jaws at the rear clamp the container down so it cannot shift during transport.

Hydraulic power

The hoist is driven entirely by hydraulics. A power take-off mounted on the transmission turns a gear pump rated near 60 cc per revolution at 250 bar. Oil is drawn from a 150 L reservoir through a suction filter, pressurized, and routed through the directional valve bank to the cylinders. The valve bank sequences the tipping and jib cylinders so the operator can run the full load cycle with a single lever. High-pressure hoses (EN 853 2SN) carry oil to the moving cylinders, and pressure sensors feed back working pressure for overload protection.

Chassis and driveline

The chassis uses two pressed C-section main rails tied by cross members. A tandem rear bogie with two drive axles carries most of the load, sprung on leaf spring packs. The driveline centers on an inline-6 turbocharged diesel engine of around 11 L, coupled through a clutch to a 12-speed manual transmission. The propeller shaft delivers torque to the rear bogie, where a hypoid gear set and differential split drive between the wheels.

Braking and electrical

Stopping a fully loaded 32 t vehicle requires a dual-circuit air brake system. An engine-driven compressor charges three air reservoir tanks, and pressing the foot valve feeds air to the brake chambers, which expand the shoes against cast-iron drums. Spring brakes inside the chambers apply automatically if pressure is lost.

The electrical system runs at 24 V. An alternator charges two series batteries, and a body controller manages the hoist interlocks, lighting, and warning beacons through relays and a main harness.

Materials and variants

Frame rails and the hoist subframe use micro-alloyed high-strength steels (S700MC) for stiffness without excess weight. The hook arm and slider step up to S960QL where stress is highest. Variants differ mainly by hook height (the DIN 30722 standard of 1,570 mm dominates in Europe), lift capacity, and whether a telescopic jib is fitted. Municipal versions add a tail-lift tip function for emptying loose waste, while construction-spec units favour higher ground clearance and heavier rear bogies.

Use and operation

In service the truck spends its day swapping bodies between sites. A typical cycle is under a minute to drop a full container, reposition, and pick up an empty one. Because the cab controls handle the entire sequence, a single driver works without a banksman in most situations. Routine maintenance focuses on greasing the pivot pins, checking hose condition, and changing the hydraulic filters on schedule.
