Livestock Truck

Product

Overview

A livestock truck carries live farm animals such as cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry. The body is a ventilated enclosure with slatted sides, adjustable decks, and ramps for loading and unloading, designed so animals travel with enough air, footing, and space to arrive healthy. Animal welfare transport rules drive much of the design: stocking density, ventilation, journey time, and the ability to inspect and water animals are all regulated. The vehicle may be a rigid truck body or a semi-trailer; the body construction is much the same either way.

The body is built around a galvanized body frame carrying the deck system, the side and roof panels, and the gates and ramps. The ventilation system keeps air moving, the waste management captures effluent, and the running gear carries it on the road. The electrical system lights the body and monitors conditions.

Body frame and panels

The body frame is galvanized steel to survive the corrosive mix of moisture and animal waste. Base rails form the perimeter, cross members carry the lower floor, upright posts support the sides and decks, and roof bows hold the roof.

The side and roof panels balance containment against airflow. Slatted side panels keep animals in while letting air flow across them and giving them a sight line, which reduces stress. Vented roof sheets shed rain while allowing light and heat escape, and mud guards keep road spray off the load.

Decks and adjustable height

The deck system lets one body carry one tier of cattle or two or three tiers of sheep or pigs. The deck floors are aluminium or composite with raised cleats so animals keep their footing, which matters because a slip can injure an animal and unsettle the whole load. A hydraulic deck lift raises and lowers the upper deck on cylinders running along linear guides and guide screws, and deck locks pin it at the chosen height. The deck rests on deck rails along the body sides.

Gates and ramps

Loading is where most animal injuries happen, so the gates and ramps are designed for calm, steady movement. The hydraulic rear ramp folds down with a cleated deck and side rails so animals walk up a gentle, enclosed incline; cylinders raise and lower it. Inside, divider gates split the body into pens for mixed loads, side doors allow inspection and single-animal access, and gate latches hold everything against the pressure of moving animals.

Ventilation and cooling

Heat stress is the main risk in transit, especially when the vehicle is stopped and natural airflow stops. The ventilation system adds forced fans, each driven by a motor on bearings in a shroud, to keep air moving during traffic halts. Mist nozzles fed by a water pump from the water tank cool the animals by evaporation in hot weather.

Waste management

The waste management system stops effluent reaching the road, which is both a hygiene and a road-safety requirement. The sealed sloped effluent floor drains through drain channels into a holding tank that is emptied through a drain valve at a proper disposal point.

Running gear and monitoring

The running gear uses axles on air springs for a gentle ride that reduces animal stress, with wheel brakes and ABS sensors sized for the high centre of gravity of a loaded stock body. The electrical system runs road and pen lamps and a welfare monitor that shows deck temperature from the temperature sensors, fan status, and water level on an LCD display, with relays driving the fans and pump.

Variants and use

A typical journey begins with loading at the farm. The rear ramp is lowered, the divider gates are set to pen the animals at the right density, and animals are walked up the cleated ramp deck in small groups to keep them calm. During transit the driver watches the welfare monitor for deck temperature and runs the fans and misters when the vehicle is stopped or the weather is hot. On arrival the process runs in reverse, with the effluent tank emptied at the destination rather than en route.

Cattle bodies run a single tall deck, sheep and pig bodies run multiple decks set by the deck lift, and poultry transporters use modular crate systems instead of open decks. Long-haul and international units add automatic watering systems and larger ventilation to meet journey-time rules. The adjustable multi-deck stock body described here is the common type for road movement of farm animals, and its design throughout is shaped by welfare rules that treat the animals' air, footing, space, and temperature as the primary requirements rather than afterthoughts.
