Car Hauler Trailer

Product

Overview

A car hauler trailer carries several finished automobiles on two open, height-adjustable decks. By staggering the cars at different heights and angles, the trailer fits more vehicles into the legal length and height envelope than a flat single deck ever could. The largest over-the-road units carry nine cars, while gooseneck and bumper-pull versions for dealers and enthusiasts carry four to six.

The trailer is open: vehicles sit on wheel runways rather than a solid floor, which saves weight and lets the operator see each tire for strapping. The defining feature is that both decks move. Hydraulic posts raise, lower, and tilt the decks so a low sports car and a tall pickup can nest together without wasted space. The whole point is packing density, so most of the engineering goes into the adjustable decks and the system that holds the cars down.

Frame and Coupling

The Main Frame is an open steel ladder. Two Mainrail Channel channels run the length, tied by Crossmember members, with a Gooseneck rising over the tow vehicle to the Coupler Kingpin. Instead of a solid deck the frame carries longitudinal Wheel Track runways that the tires rest in, which keeps weight down and gives anchor points for restraints anywhere along the length.

Upper and Lower Decks

The Upper Deck is the adjustable level. Its Upper Deck Frame rides on hydraulic Hydraulic Deck Post columns and Skid Track slides, so the operator can raise one end, drop the other, and angle the deck to tuck a car's hood under the next vehicle. Upper Runway channels hold the tires, and Deck Locking Pin locks hold the deck at the set position once the cars are placed.

The Lower Deck sits near the ground. Its Lower Deck Frame carries Lower Runway tracks and a folding Head Ramp that bridges over the gooseneck so the front vehicle can be driven up and forward. At the rear, Approach Ramp sections on Ramp Pivot Bracket hinges fold down for boarding and fold up for transport.

Hydraulic System

Deck and ramp motion comes from the Hydraulic System. A 12V electro-hydraulic Hydraulic Power Pack supplies pressure through Hydraulic Hose lines to Lift Cylinder rams inside each deck post and ramp. A Control Valve Bank bank selects which function moves, and the operator works it from a Operator Remote. This lets one person load and unload a full deck of cars without help, raising and tilting decks as each vehicle is positioned.

Wheel Restraint

Each car is held by the Wheel Restraint System system. An over-the-tire Wheel Strap loops the wheel and is tensioned by a Strap Ratchet anchored to a sliding Track Fitting in the runway. Strapping by the wheel rather than the frame avoids stressing the body and suspension and allows the springs to settle naturally. A backup Safety Chain Set is added for heavy vehicles or long hauls.

Suspension and Brakes

The Axle & Suspension on lighter units is a tandem of Axle Beam axles on slipper Slipper Leaf Spring sets joined by an Spring Equalizer, with each Wheel Hub on tapered roller Ball Bearing sets sealed by an Oil Seal. Commercial nine-car units use multiple air-ride axles instead. Braking on trailer-grade units uses the Brake System with an Electric Brake Assembly at each wheel acting on a Brake Drum, a Breakaway Kit for safety, and a Relay in the control circuit. The Electrical System system runs LED lighting, a Junction Box, and a Loading Work Light pair for night loading.

Loading Sequence

Loading a multi-car trailer is a planned sequence, not a free-for-all. The operator usually loads the upper deck first and from front to back, raising and tilting the Upper Deck so each car's nose tucks over the trunk of the one ahead. A low sports car can sit nose-down under the tail of a tall SUV, which is how staggered loading fits more vehicles into the height limit. The lower deck is loaded afterward, with the front car driven up the Head Ramp over the gooseneck and the rest boarded across the Approach Ramp at the rear. Each car is strapped down as it is placed, because once the deck above is lowered there is no room to work underneath. Unloading reverses the order, lower deck first, so the upper deck never traps a car below it.

Variants and Use

Car haulers range from open enthusiast gooseneck trailers carrying two to four cars to enclosed units for high-value vehicles and full commercial transporters that combine a powered tractor stinger with a trailer to carry nine. Enclosed haulers trade capacity for protection, wrapping the cargo in walls and a roof so collector cars and race vehicles arrive clean and undamaged. They serve dealer transfers, auction movement, fleet relocation, and consumer vehicle shipping. The trade-off across the open types is the same: open decks and adjustable geometry maximize how many vehicles fit, at the cost of leaving the cargo exposed to road grime and weather.
