Vacuum Tanker Truck

Product

Overview

A vacuum tanker truck empties liquids and slurries from places they cannot be drained by gravity: septic tanks, grease traps, portable toilets, industrial sumps, and spill sites. It works by pulling a partial vacuum in a sealed tank so atmospheric pressure pushes the waste up a suction hose into the vessel. To unload, the same pump reverses and pressurizes the tank, or the rear door opens and the load is dumped. Most are rigid trucks rather than trailers, with the tank mounted directly to the chassis.

The truck is built around the vacuum tank, the vacuum pump, the suction system, and the discharge system. The controls and safety devices protect the tank and pump, the chassis mounting carries everything, and the PTO drive powers the pump from the truck engine.

Vacuum tank

The tank is a horizontal steel cylinder rated for both vacuum and modest pressure, because it must withstand being sucked inward during loading and pushed outward during pressure discharge. The shell is 6 to 8 mm rolled steel with a dished front head and a full-diameter rear door for cleanout. Inside, surge baffles limit the slosh of a part-full load, and sight glasses show the fill level so the operator knows when to stop.

The rear door is a hinged door plate held by a quick-release clamp ring against an O-ring seal. It swings on hinges and opens for hydraulic dumping or hosing out residue.

Vacuum pump

The vacuum pump is a rotary vane pump. Its cast iron body houses an eccentric rotor whose slots carry sliding vanes; as the rotor turns the vanes seal against the bore and sweep air out, dropping the tank pressure. The same pump runs in reverse to pressurize the tank for discharge. It runs on bearings with shaft seals, is oil-lubricated, and exhausts through a silencer that cuts noise and oil mist.

A moisture trap is critical: a ball float blocks liquid from being carried into the pump, which would otherwise be wrecked by hydraulic lock. The controls and safety section adds a secondary trap as backup if the primary float fails.

Suction and discharge

The suction system is what the operator actually handles. Reinforced suction hoses resist collapse under vacuum, stored on a powered hose reel. Larger trucks add an articulated suction boom, a hydraulically positioned arm driven by cylinders and a slew drive, that guides the hose into deep or awkward pits without manual wrestling. A knife-gate suction valve isolates the inlet.

To unload, the discharge system opens a large-bore knife-gate valve that passes solids without clogging, sending the load out the discharge pipe by gravity, by tank pressure, or with help from an optional tip cylinder that raises the tank rear.

Controls and safety

The controls and safety devices keep the tank within its limits. Vacuum gauges show tank state, relief valves vent at the rated vacuum and pressure, and a changeover valve switches the tank between suction and pressure-discharge. A pressure sensor feeds the cab display.

Drive, mounting, and electrical

The PTO drive takes power from the engine through the power take-off and a drive shaft into a pump gearbox with reduction gears on bearings. The chassis mounting bolts a subframe to the truck rails and cradles the tank in saddles through brackets. The electrical system runs road and work lamps and a control panel that switches the pump, valves, and boom through its microcontroller and relays.

Variants and use

A typical job runs in two phases. To load, the operator runs the pump in vacuum mode, drops the suction hose into the tank or pit, and opens the suction valve; atmospheric pressure forces the waste up the hose into the tank, with the moisture trap closing if the tank fills to the float. The sight glasses tell the operator when to stop. To unload at the disposal site, the operator switches the changeover valve to pressure, opens the discharge valve, and the tank pressure pushes the load out, or the rear door is opened for a gravity dump of thick sludge.

Septic and sewage trucks use carbon-steel tanks. Food-grade grease and industrial chemical units use stainless to resist corrosion and to meet hygiene rules. Combination jet-vac trucks add a high-pressure water jetter to break up blockages before suction, and hydro-excavation trucks pair the vacuum pump with a water lance to dig safely around buried utilities. The vacuum-pressure tanker described here is the standard tool for emptying anything that cannot be drained by gravity, and every part of it serves the basic cycle of pulling waste in under vacuum and pushing it out under pressure.
