Milk Tanker Truck

Product

Overview

A milk tanker truck is an insulated stainless steel tanker that collects raw milk from dairy farms and hauls it to processing plants. Unlike a petroleum tanker it is built to food-hygiene standards: every surface that touches milk is smooth stainless steel, welds are ground crevice-free, and the whole tank can be washed and sanitized without anyone entering it. The trailer keeps milk cold and stable so it arrives within the quality and bacteria limits set by dairy regulators.

The trailer is built around an insulated tank mounted on a steel chassis. Collection uses the pump system and the metering system, which measures milk picked up at each farm. The clean-in-place system washes the tank between loads, the cooling and monitoring keeps temperature in range, and the running gear carries it on the road.

Insulated tank

The tank is a tank-within-a-tank. The inner shell is 316L stainless, electropolished to a dairy-grade finish so milk residue cannot lodge in surface roughness. Around it sits 80 to 100 mm of polyurethane foam, and the whole assembly is wrapped in a stainless outer jacket. The insulation is good enough to hold milk temperature within about one degree over a full day even without active cooling, which is why most collection routes need only monitoring rather than continuous refrigeration.

Inside, dished bulkheads divide the barrel so partial loads stay stable, and perforated baffles reduce surge and the foaming that surge causes. Each compartment has a sanitary manlid with a hinged cover, a pressure-vacuum vent, and a sampling point so the driver can grade milk on collection.

Collection and metering

At each farm the driver connects to the bulk tank and runs the pump system. The sanitary pump is a 316 stainless centrifugal pump with a mechanical seal and a crevice-free impeller, drawing milk through food-grade collection hoses stored on the hose reel. Sanitary butterfly valves isolate compartments and ports.

The metering system records how much milk comes from each farm, which is the basis of payment to the farmer. An air separator removes entrained air so the electromagnetic flow meter reads true milk volume, and the meter register displays litres and prints a ticket for traceable settlement. The electromagnetic meter is chosen because it has no moving parts in the flow path to harbor bacteria.

Cleaning in place

Hygiene depends on the clean-in-place system. Rotary spray balls inside each compartment cover the full inner shell with wash and sanitizing solution, and CIP connections match the dairy wash station so the cycle runs without anyone opening the tank. CIP valves route the wash fluid through the spray circuit. A typical cycle is a rinse, a hot caustic wash, an acid rinse, and a final sanitize.

Cooling and monitoring

The cooling and monitoring section keeps milk near 4 degrees. Hygienic temperature probes in thermowells read milk temperature continuously, and on long routes an optional chiller unit with its own power module, compressor drive belt, and defrost element trims any temperature rise. The temperature monitor logs the full history with its microcontroller and shows status on an LCD display, which the plant uses to confirm the milk stayed safe in transit.

Running gear and electrical

The running gear uses axles on air springs with air disc brakes and ABS sensing, which steadies the trailer against the sloshing load. The electrical system centers on a stainless control panel that sequences the pump, metering, and CIP through its microcontroller and relays, plus road lamps on the harness.

Variants and use

A typical route runs to several farms in a morning. At each stop the driver checks the milk, takes a sample through the manlid sampling point, connects the collection hose, and runs the pump until the farm bulk tank is empty, with the flow meter recording the volume from that farm. The air separator keeps the reading honest by stripping air that would otherwise inflate the measured volume. Because all of one route's milk is pooled in the tank, a single contaminated or sour farm load can spoil the whole tank, which is why the sample is taken and graded before any milk is pumped aboard.

Single-compartment tankers suit single-farm pickups, while multi-compartment units keep loads from different farms or grades separate so a problem load can be isolated. Some trailers add a refrigeration pack for hot climates, and combination food tankers can carry other liquid foods such as juice or edible oils after a validated wash through the clean-in-place system. The insulated collection tanker described here is the standard link between the farm bulk tank and the dairy plant, and its whole design follows from two demands: keep the milk cold and keep every wetted surface clean enough to pass a dairy hygiene audit.
