Three-Wheeler Taxi

Product

Overview

A three-wheeler taxi is a small motorized cab built for short urban passenger trips. It carries a driver and two or three passengers in a light sheet-metal body on three wheels: one steered wheel at the front and two driven wheels at the rear. Known by many local names, the type is the workhorse of short-distance public transport across much of Asia, Africa, and parts of Latin America. Its appeal is low purchase price, cheap running cost, a tight turning circle for congested streets, and parts that local mechanics can service without specialist tools.

The vehicle is laid out around a tubular chassis that carries the engine, the gearbox, and the two axles. The driver steers a handlebar like a motorcycle rather than a steering wheel, and the cabin seats passengers on a rear bench under a canopy. The single front wheel does the steering while the rear axle does the driving, an arrangement that keeps the drivetrain simple and the front end light.

Chassis and body

The Tubular Frame is a welded mild-steel tube backbone that holds the engine cradle, the steering head, and the rear axle mounts in one rigid unit. A pressed steel Floor Pan bolts across it to form the footwell and seat base. Several body panels skin the structure, and a curved front apron covers the front wheel and carries the headlamp. Mudguards over each wheel deflect road spray. The body is deliberately part-open, with cloth or roll-down curtains rather than full doors, which keeps weight and cost down and suits warm climates.

Engine and transmission

Power comes from a small Engine, usually an air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke of about 200 cc producing 7-10 hp. The cylinder is finned aluminium with a cast-iron liner, and a flywheel fan forces air over the fins since there is no liquid coolant. The piston drives the crankshaft, and a carburettor or gas mixer meters the charge. Many units run on compressed natural gas for lower fuel cost and cleaner exhaust, using a venturi mixer in place of the petrol carburettor. A Spark Plug fires the mixture, and a chambered muffler quiets the exhaust.

Drive passes through a multi-plate wet clutch to a gearbox with four forward gear sets and a reverse idler. Reverse matters here because a three-wheeler cannot be pushed backward easily by hand when loaded. The final drive carries gearbox output to the rear axle by chain or a short shaft.

Suspension, axles, and wheels

The front of the vehicle uses a motorcycle-style telescopic fork with springs and hydraulic dampers, carrying the steered front wheel. The rear runs a driven Rear Axle & Wheels with two half-shafts fed by a differential. Unlike a pedal rickshaw, this vehicle does use a differential, because the higher speeds make tyre scrub from a locked axle unacceptable. The differential lets the inner and outer rear wheels turn at different speeds in a corner. All three wheels are small, typically 8-10 inch rims on 4.00-8 tyres, which keeps the floor low and the centre of gravity manageable. Rear suspension with dampers smooths the ride for seated passengers.

Steering, brakes, and electrics

Steering is by handlebar acting through a steerer column and the steering head to the front fork, with engine speed set by a twist grip. Braking uses hydraulic drum brakes on all three wheels, fed by a master cylinder through fluid lines from a foot pedal, with a front hand lever as backup. The electrical system is a basic 12-volt setup: a magneto charges a battery and feeds an ignition coil, a harness runs the headlamp, tail lamps, and horn.

Cabin and variants

The Cabin & Trim holds a driver saddle and a rear bench for two or three riders, under a canvas or hard roof. A windscreen and side curtains give weather protection, and grab rails steady passengers. Common variants include cargo three-wheelers that replace the bench with a flat bed or box, fully enclosed versions with hard doors for colder regions, and battery-electric models that swap the engine and gearbox for a motor and battery while keeping the same chassis and cabin. The electric variant has spread quickly in cities tightening their emissions rules, since the simple body and suspension carry over almost unchanged and only the powertrain is replaced.

The three-wheeler taxi survives because its economics are hard to beat for short trips. A small engine sips fuel, the light body needs little material to build, and the whole vehicle is simple enough that an owner-driver can maintain it. Where roads are narrow and traffic is dense, the tight turning circle and small footprint let it reach destinations that a four-wheeled cab cannot, which keeps it central to urban transport in much of the world even as larger vehicles grow more common.
