City Car

Product

Overview

A city car is the smallest practical class of passenger automobile, built to be cheap to buy, cheap to run and easy to park in dense urban areas. Length is kept under about 3.7 m, weight under roughly a tonne, and every subsystem is chosen for low cost and light weight rather than performance. The engineering theme is simplification: a small Powertrain, a Chassis with the least expensive suspension that still works, and an Interior stripped to what owners actually use. The result is a car that is nimble in traffic, returns high fuel economy, and fits into parking spaces larger cars cannot.

Powertrain

The Powertrain almost always uses a small three-cylinder petrol Petrol Engine of 1.0 to 1.2 litres. Three cylinders reduce friction and cost compared with a four, and modern designs balance them well enough for acceptable smoothness. The Engine Block is aluminium, the Cylinder Head carries a single overhead camshaft driving twelve valves, and a Timing Chain rather than a belt keeps maintenance low. Fuel is metered by a Fuel Injector in each cylinder and ignited by a Spark Plug.

Power reaches the front wheels through a Transaxle, usually a five-speed manual to save cost and weight, sometimes an automated version of the same gearbox. The Clutch couples the engine to the Gear Set, and a Final Differential splits torque to the Drive Shaft half-shafts, each with a CV Joint at both ends to allow steering and suspension travel. Three rubber Engine Mount mounts isolate the powertrain from the body.

Chassis

Cost drives the Chassis design. The front uses a MacPherson Strut MacPherson strut, which combines a Coil Spring, a damper and the steering pivot in one compact unit that bolts directly to the body. The rear uses a Torsion Beam Axle torsion beam axle: a single pressed-steel Torsion Beam that twists to control body roll, far cheaper and lighter than an independent rear suspension and adequate for the modest speeds and loads of a city car.

Braking is split by cost as well. The front wheels carry a Front Brake disc brake with a single-piston Brake Caliper, while the rear wheels use a cheaper Rear Brake drum brake where the Brake Shoe shoes press outward against a Brake Drum. Drums also make a simple, durable parking brake. The Wheel Assembly assemblies use small steel rims with trim covers rather than alloys, and the Steering Rack rack is electrically assisted so there is no hydraulic pump to add cost and drag.

Body

The Body Shell is a short steel unibody, the Body Structure, typically offered as a three or five door hatchback. The tall, boxy proportions that look unusual on a city car are deliberate: they create headroom and a usable boot within a tiny footprint. Side Door Assembly assemblies, a rear Tailgate and a front Engine Hood complete the closures, with a Windshield of laminated glass. Front and rear Bumper units pair a moulded fascia with a steel Impact Beam sized for low-speed urban impacts, which keeps repair costs down after the minor knocks common in city driving.

Fuel and electrical systems

The Fuel System is conventional and small: a 35-45 litre plastic Fuel Tank, an in-tank Fuel Pump, an inline Fuel Filter and an EVAP Canister charcoal canister that traps fuel vapour. Combined with the small engine and light weight, this gives a long range despite the modest tank.

The Electrical System system centres on a 12 V 12 V Battery charged by a belt-driven Alternator, with a Starter Motor motor to crank the engine. A single Engine Control Unit manages fuel and ignition, and the Wiring Harness carries power through a fuse box and a handful of relays. Lighting uses Headlamp units that increasingly adopt LED boards for efficiency and long life.

Interior and climate

The Interior seats four in a Seat Assembly arrangement of two front and a bench-style rear. Seats are manually adjusted, trimmed in hard-wearing fabric, and built on a simple Seat Frame. The Dashboard carries an Instrument Cluster and a compact Radio Head Unit head unit, often with smartphone mirroring instead of a built-in navigation system to save cost. Materials are mostly moulded plastic, chosen to be durable and inexpensive.

The HVAC Unit unit provides heating and ventilation as standard, with air conditioning often optional on the cheapest trims. A Blower Motor pushes air through a PTC Heater Core for heat and, when fitted, a A/C Evaporator for cooling, with a Cabin Air Filter cleaning incoming air and a pair of HVAC Actuator flaps directing it.

Use and economics

City cars exist at the bottom of the market, so purchase price, fuel economy, insurance cost and parking ease matter far more than acceleration or top speed. Their light weight and small engines return strong fuel economy in stop-start traffic, and the short body and tight turning circle make them genuinely easier to live with in crowded cities. The trade-offs are motorway refinement, crash performance against larger vehicles, and limited cargo and passenger space. Many markets are now shifting the segment toward small electric powertrains, but the petrol city car remains widespread where low purchase price is the deciding factor.
