Parcel Delivery Van

Product

Overview

A parcel delivery van is a forward-control walk-in vehicle built for last-mile package distribution. The body sits low to the ground with a flat floor, a high roof, and sliding doors so a driver can step in and out hundreds of times a day with minimal effort. Most modern fleets specify an electric drivetrain because the daily route distance is short and the vehicle returns to a depot each night, where it charges from grid power. Gross vehicle weight stays under 10,000 lb so the van can be driven on a standard license while carrying a useful parcel payload.

The vehicle pairs the Chassis, a low forward-control ladder frame, with the Electric Powertrain, a single-motor electric drive fed by a floor-mounted battery. The Walk-In Body forms the walk-in enclosure, and the Cargo Fit-Out adds shelving and restraints sized to delivery work. Doors, suspension, brakes, steering, and an electronics suite round out the design, with the electronics tied to the fleet routing software through a cellular link.

Chassis

The Ladder Frame is a box-section steel ladder with a dropped center rail that lowers the step-in height to about 16 inches. Bolted Crossmember units tie the rails and carry the under-floor battery mounts. A molded Step-In Entry with an anti-slip tread lets the driver enter without stooping. Because the cab sits forward of the front axle, the wheelbase stays short for a given cargo length, which tightens the turning circle for neighborhood streets.

Electric powertrain

The Drive Unit combines a permanent-magnet motor with a single-speed reduction gear in one housing. Its Stator Assembly and Rotor Assembly drive a Helical Gear Pair reduction inside a Gearbox Housing, with bearings and seals retaining the lubricant. Energy comes from the Battery Pack, a 90 kWh lithium-ion pack built from eight Battery Module units at a nominal 350 V. A Battery Management System watches cell voltage, current, and temperature, and high-voltage HV Contactor units isolate the pack when the van is off.

Power flows through the Traction Inverter, which uses a silicon-carbide SiC Power Module to switch the three motor phases, with a film DC-Link Capacitor capacitor smoothing the bus. An 11 kW Onboard Charger refills the pack overnight at the depot. The Thermal Management loop circulates coolant with an electric Coolant Pump, cools the pack through a refrigerant Battery Chiller during fast charging, and warms it with a Heating Element in cold weather.

Body and cargo fit-out

The Walk-In Body is built on a bonded and riveted aluminum Body Frame clad in composite Body Skin panels that resist dents and corrosion. The High Roof gives 6.5 ft of standing height so the driver can move upright, and the Cargo Floor is flat with recessed track for shelving feet. A wraparound Windshield provides a wide forward view for spotting addresses.

Inside, the Cargo Fit-Out arranges six Shelf Unit bays with lipped trays that hold parcels in delivery sequence. A Bulkhead separates the cab from the cargo area with a pass-through door, adjustable Load Bar units keep loose packages from sliding, and a recessed Floor Track anchors straps and shelving.

Doors

The Door Set set is central to delivery productivity. Two sliding Cab Door units open automatically at each stop and stay clear of curbside obstacles. A counterbalanced Rear Roll-Up Door roll-up handles bulk loading at the depot, and a wide Curbside Door lets the driver reach the shelving from the sidewalk. Electric Door Actuator units open and close the doors on a signal from the driver or the route software.

Suspension, brakes, and steering

The Suspension uses independent Front Strut assemblies on coil springs with a leaf-sprung rear beam to support varying parcel loads. The Brake System blend motor regeneration with friction: the Brake Control Module module commands hydraulic Brake Caliper units on Brake Rotor discs only when regeneration alone cannot meet the demand, which extends pad life. The Steering System uses an electric-assist Steering Rack with a 38 ft turning circle for tight neighborhoods.

Electronics and use

The Electronics and Telematics suite ties the van into the fleet. A Driver Display touchscreen shows the route and package list, a Telematics Gateway gateway with a Cellular Modem reports position and receives sequence updates, and a set of Surround Camera and Forward Radar sensors support backing assistance and automatic braking. A DC-DC Converter converter feeds the 12 V accessories from the high-voltage pack. In service, these vans run fixed daily loops of 100 to 150 stops, return to charge overnight, and are maintained on a low-wear schedule because the electric drivetrain has few moving parts and the regenerative brakes spare the friction components.
