Livestock Trailer
ProductOverview
A livestock trailer, often called a stock trailer, hauls cattle, horses, hogs, sheep, and other animals. Its design priorities differ from freight trailers: the animals are living cargo that must breathe, stay on their feet, and not injure themselves, so ventilation, footing, and smooth interior surfaces matter as much as load capacity. Most are built from aluminum because it resists the corrosion that animal waste causes and keeps the trailer light enough to tow behind a pickup.
Sizes run from short bumper-pull units for a few head to long gooseneck trailers that carry a full pen of cattle. The body is slatted rather than solid so air moves through the load while the trailer is rolling, which keeps animals cool and reduces respiratory stress on long hauls. Inside, gates let the operator divide the load so animals do not crowd or shift dangerously.
Frame and Coupling
The Frame & Coupling is a welded aluminum chassis. Two Aluminum Mainrail I-beams carry the load, tied by Floor Crossmember members that support the floor. The front ends in a Gooseneck Frame for larger trailers or an A-frame on bumper-pull models, terminating in a Hitch Coupler that joins the tow vehicle. Aluminum framing keeps the empty weight low so more of the tow rating goes to live weight.
Body and Ventilation
The Body & Ventilation is the most visible difference from a freight trailer. Horizontal Side Slat Panel panels form the sides, leaving open gaps that let air flow across the animals while keeping them contained. Roof Panel sections shade the load, and adjustable Airflow Vent openings let the operator close down airflow in cold weather. Corner Post members anchor the structure, and a smooth interior Interior Rub Rail protects animals from edges. Lower solid Sheet Metal Panel kick panels block road spray and wind at hoof level while the upper slats stay open.
Internal Compartments
Animals travel better in groups that cannot shift the whole length of the trailer, so the Internal Compartments system divides the space. Full-height Center Divider Gate dividers split the trailer into pens, and sliding Cut Gate panels let the operator sort and hold individual animals during loading and unloading. Each gate uses an animal-safe Gate Latch and a heavy Gate Hinge so it swings reliably under the push of a crowding animal.
Floor and Drainage
Footing decides whether animals stay calm or panic, so the Floor & Drainage gets careful attention. Extruded aluminum Floor Plank sections form the surface, cast with raised Traction Cleat traction ribs so hooves grip even when the floor is wet. A set of Floor Drain ports lets waste and wash water run out, keeping the floor from becoming slick, and removable rubber Comfort Mat sections cushion the floor for long trips.
Rear Gate and Loading
Animals board and exit through the Rear Gate & Ramp. A full-width Rear Gate gate swings or slides open, secured by Slam Latch catches. A fold-down Loading Ramp Panel with Ramp Assist Spring assists and Coil Spring counterbalance gives the animals a gentle slope to walk up rather than a step they would balk at.
Suspension and Brakes
The Axle & Suspension is a tandem of Axle Beam axles on slipper Slipper Leaf Spring sets joined by an Spring Equalizer, with each Wheel Hub on tapered roller Ball Bearing sets sealed by an Oil Seal. Torsion suspension is offered as a smoother-riding alternative that reduces jolting on live cargo, which matters because a rough ride tires and stresses animals over a long trip. The Brake System uses an Electric Brake Assembly at each wheel acting on a Brake Drum, with a Breakaway Kit and a Relay in the control circuit. The breakaway battery and switch apply the trailer brakes automatically if the trailer ever separates from the tow vehicle, which is a legal requirement on trailers of this weight.
Animal Welfare and Handling
Much of the design serves animal welfare directly. The open slatted body keeps fresh air moving so animals do not overheat in summer or breathe their own ammonia in a closed box, and the adjustable Airflow Vent openings let the driver close down airflow in winter without sealing the trailer entirely. The cleated, drained floor keeps footing dry so animals stay on their feet through braking and cornering, and the internal gates stop a full load from surging to one end. A gentle loading ramp and smooth interior surfaces reduce the stress and injuries that come from animals balking or scraping against edges. Drivers are trained to start, stop, and corner smoothly because live cargo cannot be strapped down the way freight can.
Variants and Use
The Electrical System system adds an Interior Dome Lamp for night loading and checking. Variants include combination stock-and-tack horse trailers with a separate dressing and equipment area, hog-specific low units with multiple decks, and large semi-pulled cattle pots that carry a full commercial load. All share the same goal of moving animals with enough air, footing, and division to arrive uninjured, and all are built from corrosion-resistant aluminum so they survive years of exposure to manure and wash water.
