Grand Tourer
ProductOverview
A grand tourer is a high-performance luxury coupe built for covering long distances at speed in comfort. It differs from a pure sports car by prioritizing cabin refinement, ride quality, and touring range alongside performance. The Aluminum Body uses an aluminum-intensive structure to keep weight down, and the powertrain is arranged for balance, with the Twin-Turbo V8 set behind the front axle line and the Dual-Clutch Transaxle at the rear.
The class name comes from the Italian gran turismo. The goal is a car that can cross a continent in a day with two occupants and luggage, then deliver sports-car pace when the road allows.
Body
The Aluminum Body is built around an aluminum Aluminum Spaceframe, assembled from extruded Aluminum Extrusion Member members joined to cast Aluminum Node Casting nodes by structural adhesive and a Self-Pierce Rivet Set. This bonded-and-riveted method gives high stiffness at low mass. Closures mix materials: aluminum for the Hood and Door Assembly units, and SMC composite for the Composite Fender panels. The frameless doors use a Soft-Close Latch latch that pulls the door fully shut.
Engine
The Twin-Turbo V8 is a 4.0 L twin-turbocharged V8 with a cast aluminum Cylinder Block. Two Turbocharger units sit in the vee between the cylinder banks, a layout that shortens the path from exhaust port to turbine and sharpens throttle response. Charge air passes through a Charge Air Cooler before entering the cylinders. Each Cylinder Head runs double overhead cams with a Variable Valve Timing Unit for variable valve timing. Lubrication is by a Dry-Sump Oil Pump dry-sump system, which keeps oil pressure stable under the high cornering loads the car can generate and lets the engine sit lower in the frame.
Transmission and driveline
The Dual-Clutch Transaxle is an 8-speed dual-clutch unit mounted at the rear axle. Placing it there, connected to the engine by the Torque Tube Driveline torque tube, balances the car near 50:50 front to rear. The Dual Wet Clutch Pack pre-selects gears for fast shifts, managed by the Mechatronic Control Unit controller and its Shift Solenoid valves. The rigid Torque Tube encloses a carbon-fiber Connecting Shaft and ties the engine and transaxle into one stiff structure, and an integrated Open Differential drives the rear wheels through two Rear Halfshaft shafts.
Chassis and brakes
The Adaptive Air Suspension is an adaptive air system. Each Suspension Corner uses a double-wishbone geometry with a Air Spring for adjustable ride height and a Continuously Variable Damper whose Magnetorheological Valve varies damping in milliseconds. The Suspension Control Unit softens the ride for touring and firms it for sport driving. Steering is by the Variable-Ratio Steering system, a variable-ratio rack paired with a Rear-Wheel Steering Actuator actuator that turns the rear wheels for low-speed agility and high-speed stability. Braking uses the Carbon-Ceramic Brakes, with C/SiC Carbon-Ceramic Disc rotors gripped by monobloc Monobloc Caliper units for fade-free stopping.
Interior
The Luxury Interior is the defining feature of the class. Each Multi-Adjust Seat is a power-adjustable unit with a Seat Massage Bladder Unit and Seat Ventilation Fan cooling. The Dashboard carries a digital Instrument Cluster, a wide Infotainment Head Unit, and a Head-Up Display head-up display. A Wood and Leather Trim Set of wood and leather covers the cabin surfaces. Layout is usually 2+2, with usable rear space and a real trunk for touring luggage.
Electronics and climate
The Electronics Suite suite includes the ADAS Sensor Suite driver-assistance package, a multi-channel Premium Audio Amplifier driving 14 cabin Speaker units, and a Central Gateway Module tying the vehicle networks together. The Multi-Zone Climate system provides four independent zones, served by two HVAC Unit cores and an electric A/C Compressor. Several Cabin Temperature Sensor units feed the climate controller.
Materials and construction
A grand tourer must be light enough for performance yet solid enough for refinement, which leads to a mixed-material body. The Aluminum Spaceframe uses extruded and cast aluminum joined by structural adhesive and the Self-Pierce Rivet Set rather than welding, a method that produces a stiff, light, and quiet structure. The Composite Fender panels are SMC composite, which resists minor impacts and small parking knocks without permanent dents. Inside the engine, titanium and forged steel appear in the rotating assembly to handle high boost from the Turbocharger units. The cabin is lined with the Wood and Leather Trim Set of real wood and leather, materials chosen for appearance and feel rather than cost. The dry-sump Dry-Sump Oil Pump system allows the engine to sit low, lowering the center of gravity for better handling without sacrificing the comfortable seating height buyers expect.
How it balances comfort and speed
The defining trick of a grand tourer is adjusting its character on demand. In a comfort setting, the Suspension Control Unit raises ride height slightly, softens the Continuously Variable Damper units, and relaxes the Magnetorheological Valve for a cushioned ride, while the Dual-Clutch Transaxle shifts early and gently for quiet cruising. In a sport setting, the same controller lowers the body, firms the dampers, sharpens the Variable-Ratio Steering ratio, and holds gears longer. The Rear-Wheel Steering Actuator actuator turns the rear wheels opposite the fronts at low speed for agility, and in the same direction at high speed for stability during fast lane changes. This range lets one car serve as a relaxed long-distance cruiser and a fast sporting machine.
Variants and use
Grand tourers are sold as fixed-roof coupes and convertibles, with engine outputs from roughly 410 to 460 kW and optional all-wheel drive. Some use V12 engines or plug-in hybrid powertrains that add electric range for quiet city driving. The use case is high-speed long-distance travel with two occupants, where the combination of the aluminum Aluminum Body, adaptive suspension, and luxury cabin matters more than the lap-time focus of a track car.
