Minivan
ProductOverview
A minivan, also called an MPV, is a tall family vehicle built to carry seven or eight people and their belongings with the least wasted space. Its one-box shape, a single continuous volume from the windscreen back rather than separate engine, cabin, and boot, maximises interior room for a given footprint. The two features that define the type are the sliding side doors, which open wide in tight car parks without swinging out, and the flexible three-row seating that converts from people-carrier to cargo van and back.
The vehicle is built on a tall Body Shell carrying the Powertrain, the Chassis, the Three-Row Seating, and the two Power Sliding Door units, with the Tri-Zone Climate, Electrical System, and Fuel System sized for a large cabin and a heavy load.
Powertrain
A minivan must move a heavy, fully loaded vehicle smoothly, so it typically uses a Powertrain built around a transverse V6 V6 Engine driving the front wheels. Front-wheel drive lets the floor sit low and flat, since there is no driveshaft tunnel to the rear. The engine feeds a Automatic Transaxle, a wide-ratio automatic transaxle whose Torque Converter gives smooth, torque-rich pull-away and whose Open Differential splits drive to the front wheels through two Driveshafts. The ratios are chosen for relaxed cruising and the ability to climb grades with eight people aboard.
Body and sliding doors
The Body Shell is a one-box unibody with a Low Flat Floor Pan kept low and flat for easy step-in and fold-flat seating. A large glass area and an optional Panoramic Sunroof make the cabin feel open. At the rear, a Power Tailgate powered by twin struts opens the full-height load space.
The Power Sliding Door is the part that most distinguishes a minivan from a wagon or SUV. Instead of a hinge, the door rides on three Slider Tracks, upper, centre, and lower, on Roller Carriage carriages that first pull the door outward, then slide it back alongside the body. A Slider Drive Motor and Drive Cable & Pulley open and close it at the touch of a button, and a Anti-Pinch Sensor strip stops the door if it meets a hand or obstacle. This lets the door open to its full width even when parked close to another car, which a swinging door cannot do.
Seating
The Three-Row Seating is engineered for flexibility. The front row uses two Seat Assembly captain chairs. The second row is a pair of Second-Row Captain Chair captain chairs that slide along Long Seat Rails and, on many models, can be removed entirely. The third row is a Stow-in-Floor Bench bench that folds and tumbles into a Stow Fold Mechanism well in the floor, turning the rear into a flat cargo deck without removing any seats. This stow-in-floor design is a hallmark of the modern minivan.
Chassis
The Chassis is tuned for ride comfort and stability with a full load rather than for sport. The front uses a MacPherson Strut layout and the rear a Multi-Link Rear Corner for good wheel control over bumps. Brakes are Front Disc Brake discs with vented rotors at the front, sized for the vehicle's weight, and disc brakes at the rear. Steering is by Steering Rack (EPS) with electric assist, geared for easy low-speed manoeuvring.
Comfort and systems
Keeping a long cabin comfortable takes more than one heater, so the Tri-Zone Climate system pairs a front HVAC Unit with a Rear HVAC Unit unit fed through a Overhead Duct Run overhead run, giving separate temperature zones front and rear. The Electrical System system adds control units for the doors and a Rear-Seat Entertainment system with screens for back-seat passengers. A Saddle Fuel Tank fuel tank straddles the drivetrain under the flat floor, using two pumps to draw from both lobes.
Minivans are bought by families and shuttle operators who value interior space, easy access through sliding doors, and seating that reconfigures for people or cargo. The body style lost ground to three-row SUVs in some markets, but it remains the most space-efficient way to carry a large group, which keeps it in production from several makers.
Packaging efficiency
The reason a minivan carries more people in less length than an SUV is packaging. The one-box shape puts the windscreen far forward over the engine, so almost the whole footprint becomes cabin. The Low Flat Floor Pan sits low because front-wheel drive removes the need for a rear driveshaft tunnel, which both eases step-in and lets the Stow-in-Floor Bench fold flat into a well rather than stacking on top of the floor. The Saddle Fuel Tank is shaped to wrap around the drivetrain so the fuel does not steal cabin or cargo room. Even the Power Sliding Door contributes: because it slides instead of swinging, the designers can push the cabin walls outward to the edge of the body without worrying about door swing in a car park. Together these choices give a minivan interior volume that a taller, longer SUV struggles to match.
Family-oriented systems
Much of a minivan's content exists to serve a cabin full of passengers rather than the driver. The tri-zone Tri-Zone Climate system keeps the second and third rows comfortable through a Rear HVAC Unit unit and overhead ducting, which matters in a vehicle this long. The Rear-Seat Entertainment screens occupy children on long trips. The Anti-Pinch Sensor on each power door and the anti-trap logic in the Power Tailgate protect small hands, and the second-row Second-Row Captain Chair captain chairs slide on their Long Seat Rails to ease access to the third row. The Electrical System system carries more control units than a comparable car precisely because so many of these conveniences are powered and automated. This focus on the people in the back, more than on driving dynamics, is what defines the minivan as a vehicle type.
