Overview

Motion control turntables enable smooth, repeatable product rotations for e-commerce photography, CGI reference capture, and 360° video display. This turntable uses a low-speed brushless motor with planetary reduction, providing smooth, vibration-free rotation at programmable speeds. The Wireless Controller wireless interface and mobile app allow operators to execute preset motion sequences or adjust speed in real time, without being tethered to a cable.

The core use case is 360° product shots: the camera is fixed in space, and the turntable rotates the product continuously for 10–30 seconds at a constant rate. Post-production extracts every Nth frame to create an interactive 3D product view (common on e-commerce sites like Amazon or furniture retailers).

Mechanical Design and Bearing System

The Rotating Platter aluminum disc sits on a sealed Bearing Assembly angular contact ball bearing. This bearing is rated for heavy axial loads (perpendicular to the platter plane), supporting the product weight without wobble or runout. The bearing is preloaded (slightly compressed) to eliminate internal clearance, ensuring silent operation.

The Platter Top Surface protective surface is a textured rubber mat or non-slip adhesive film, preventing products from sliding during rotation. The Platter Stud center M10 stud allows mounting products directly or via a turntable (a smaller rotating disc nested on the main platter).

Motor and Gearbox Selection

The Drive Motor Assembly drive assembly pairs a 24V BLDC Motor brushless motor (400 RPM no-load) with a Planetary Gearbox planetary reducer (30:1 ratio). This yields a 13 RPM maximum output speed, smooth and nearly silent compared to direct-drive motors at the same speed.

Variable-speed control is achieved by PWM (pulse-width modulation) of the motor supply voltage. At 50% PWM, the motor runs at ~200 RPM input, reducing output to ~6.5 RPM. This allows seamless speed variation from 1 to 13 RPM without mechanical gearing changes.

Position Feedback and Control

The Position Encoder rotary encoder mounted on the motor shaft tracks platter position. This absolute encoder reports current rotation angle (0–359°) to the Wireless Controller wireless controller every 10 milliseconds.

The controller uses this feedback to implement:

  1. Preset stop positions: Rotate to 0°, 90°, 180°, 270° and hold (useful for multi-angle product photography).
  2. Timed sequences: Rotate at 5 RPM for 30 seconds, then stop (standard 360° video capture).
  3. Back-and-forth rocking: Oscillate between 0° and 180° at variable speed (product display mode).
  4. Continuous rotation with speed ramp: Start at 2 RPM, accelerate to 10 RPM over 5 seconds, then decelerate back to 2 RPM (smooth reveal effect).

Wireless Control and Mobile App

The Wireless Controller hand unit communicates with the turntable via Bluetooth LE (low-energy), eliminating cable tether and enabling repositioning during operation. The Controller PCB PCB in the hand unit houses the Microcontroller STM32L4 microcontroller and Hand Controller Battery AA batteries, providing 50+ hour runtime between battery changes.

A companion mobile app (iOS/Android) provides a user interface showing:

Typical Product Photography Workflow

Setup: A jewelry or watch is placed on the platter, secured with a small museum wax dot if needed. The camera is positioned 1–2 meters away, lighting is set up (key light, fill light, back light), and the operator launches the mobile app.

Capture: The operator taps a preset button labeled "Standard 360" (13 RPM, 30-second continuous rotation, start position 0°). The platter begins rotating smoothly. The camera rolls at 24fps for 30 seconds, capturing 720 frames.

Post-Production: The video is processed to extract every 24th frame (one per second), creating a 30-frame sequence. In 3D web viewers, stepping through these frames creates the illusion of smooth 360° rotation. Viewers on e-commerce websites can drag their finger to manually rotate the product, with the app interpolating between frames for smooth motion.

Advanced Sequences and Camera Sync

For complex product visualization (showing different angles with varied lighting), operators pre-program motion sequences:

  • Rotate full circle at 2 RPM (50-second 360°)
  • Stop at 45° for 3 seconds (beauty shot)
  • Rotate to 135°, stop for 3 seconds (side view)
  • Continue looping

The optional Timecode Sync Option timecode module outputs LTC synchronized to platter rotation speed. This allows a camera to auto-sync to the turntable: if the turntable completes a 360° rotation in 30 seconds (12 RPM), the timecode advances accordingly. In post-production, the editor can match timecode between camera and turntable motion data, synchronizing camera pans to product rotation for seamless cinematic reveals.

Material Compatibility and Safety

The Platter Top Surface rubber mat surface is safe for most products (wood, metal, ceramic, plastic). Delicate items (glassware, fine ceramics) should be mounted on a turntable (secondary rotating disc) or padded base to prevent sliding.

The Safety Ring removable aluminum ring prevents tipping during high-speed rotation. For products with a high center-of-gravity or small footprint, the safety ring is essential; without it, centrifugal acceleration at 13 RPM can tip unstable products.

Maximum safe load is 50 kg at the platter center. Distributed load (multiple products at the platter perimeter) is limited to 30 kg to prevent bearing overload.

Limitations and Maintenance

The turntable produces smooth, imperceptible vibration, but slight bearing wear over time (months to years) can introduce micro-oscillations. Bearings are sealed and require no maintenance. Eventually (after 2000+ operating hours), bearing stiffness degrades, and replacement is necessary.

The motor speed control is PWM-based (on-off switching at high frequency) rather than analog ramping. Very low speeds (<1 RPM) can show slight stepping effects due to PWM quantization. For extremely smooth slow-motion reveals, a more expensive analog or servo motor is required.

Wind-up: If the turntable is commanded to rotate to a precise position (e.g., 45°) and held there, the motor continuously consumes power to maintain the position against friction and load perturbations. For long holds (>1 hour), a mechanical brake (not shown) is recommended to reduce power consumption.

The hand controller's Bluetooth range is 50–100 meters line-of-sight; obstacles (walls, dense RF interference) reduce range. For studio use, this is rarely a limitation.
