Articulated Tractor

Overview

An articulated tractor is a four-wheel-drive farm and earthmoving machine whose chassis is split into two halves joined at a central pivot. Instead of turning the front wheels against a fixed frame, the whole tractor bends in the middle. The Articulation Joint swings the rear half relative to the front by up to 42 degrees in either direction, which steers the machine while keeping all four wheels tracking the same arc. Because every wheel is the same large diameter and every axle is driven, the design puts power to the ground far better than a conventional front-steer tractor, especially in soft soil where traction is the limiting factor.

This page documents a 470 HP class machine of roughly 21,500 kg ballasted weight. The whole tractor reduces to nine subsystems: the Diesel Engine, the Powershift Transmission, the articulation joint, four identical units of the Drive Axle, the Hydraulic System, the Operator Cab, the Electrical System, the PTO, Drawbar & Hitch, and eight units of the Wheel & Tire in dual configuration.

Engine

The prime mover is a 15 litre inline-six turbo diesel rated at 470 HP. A forged Crankshaft in 42CrMo4 runs in seven Main Bearing Shell shells inside a cast iron Cylinder Block fitted with wet Wet Cylinder Liner sleeves. Each Piston Assembly carries a forged steel piston on a 36MnVS4 Connecting Rod. The four-valve Cylinder Head is fed by a 2200 bar Common-Rail Fuel System system, and two series Turbocharger units with Inconel turbine wheels supply boost across the full speed range.

Meeting Tier 4 Final means the exhaust passes through the Exhaust Aftertreatment stage, where a Diesel Particulate Filter traps soot and an SCR Catalyst reduces NOx using urea metered by the DEF Dosing Injector. The Cooling Package sizes its radiator, charge-air cooler, and viscous fan for sustained full-load work in hot dusty conditions.

Transmission

Power leaves the engine through a Torque Converter that multiplies torque at low speed and locks up for efficient road travel. Behind it, the Powershift Transmission is a 16-speed full powershift built around a Planetary Gear Train of three planetary sets. Ratios are selected by engaging and releasing six hydraulic Hydraulic Clutch Pack units, each a stack of Friction Disc and Separator Plate elements squeezed by a piston and returned by springs. Shift timing and pressure are governed by the Transmission Control Valve, whose proportional solenoids let the controller blend clutch fill and overlap so gear changes happen under load without interrupting tractive effort.

Articulation Joint

The articulation joint is the subsystem that defines the machine. The front and rear pivot frames are welded from S690QL high-strength plate and are connected by two Articulation Pivot Pin (kingpin) kingpins, an upper and a lower, each running in tapered roller bearings. Two opposed Steering Cylinder hydraulic rams swing the rear frame to steer; extending one while retracting the other bends the joint. An Oscillation Bearing adds a second degree of freedom, letting the rear frame roll up to 15 degrees relative to the front so all four tires stay loaded when one wheel climbs a furrow or rut.

Driveline torque crosses the pivot through the Center Driveshaft, which uses two universal joints and a slip yoke to carry power from the transmission to the rear axles regardless of articulation angle. Greasing the pin and bearing surfaces through the Grease Fitting (zerk) points is a routine maintenance task because the joint carries the entire steering and traction load.

Drive Axles

All four axles are the same heavy-duty Drive Axle unit, which keeps spare parts common front to rear. Each axle uses a Limited-Slip Differential with a 20MnCr5 Crown Wheel & Pinion and a diff-lock clutch for full traction in slippery ground. Final gear reduction happens outboard at each wheel in a Planetary Final Drive, which keeps the Axle Half-Shaft torque low and lets the axle carry very high loads in a compact housing. Braking is by oil-immersed Wet Multi-Disc Brake packs that resist fade and contamination far better than dry brakes.

Hydraulics, Cab and PTO

Implements draw from the Hydraulic System, a load-sensing closed-center circuit fed by a variable Variable Piston Pump that supplies up to 435 L/min only when flow is demanded. Up to six Selective Control Valve (remote) outlets run drills, planters, and air carts, while the main Main Control Valve Block meters internal functions.

The Operator Cab is a ROPS and FOPS rated structure pressurized through a category 4 Cat-4 Cab Air Filter so the operator works in clean air during spraying and tillage. Controls sit in the Armrest Control Console with a Multifunction Lever, and an air-suspension Air-Suspension Seat isolates the operator from frame motion.

At the back, the PTO, Drawbar & Hitch drives implements through a 1000 rpm PTO Output Shaft geared by the PTO Gearbox and engaged by a wet PTO Engagement Clutch. A category IV/N Three-Point Hitch with two Hitch Lift Cylinder rams raises mounted implements, and a heavy Heavy Drawbar handles towed loads. The Electrical System ties it together on a 24 V bus, with the Vehicle Control Unit coordinating engine, transmission, and ISOBUS implement data.
