Power Harrow

Product

Overview

A power harrow prepares a fine, level seedbed by stirring the top layer of soil with rows of fast-spinning tines, then firming it with a roller, all in a single pass. Unlike a tine harrow or disc that is simply dragged and relies on forward speed to do its work, a power harrow is driven from the tractor power takeoff, so its tines work the soil actively regardless of how fast the tractor moves. This lets it break clods into a uniform tilth at a steady, controllable speed without inverting the soil or bringing up buried weed seed, which is why it is the usual final tillage step before drilling small-seeded or precision crops.

The machine spins a row of Vertical Rotor shafts in a sealed Gear Trough, each carrying tines from the Tine Set. Power reaches them through the PTO Drive Line, depth is set by the Crumbler Roller through the Depth Control, the Side Plate panels level the edges, and the whole tool mounts on the Three-Point Hitch.

The gear trough and rotors

The defining feature is the Gear Trough, a long oil-filled steel box that lines up the rotors across the working width. Its Trough Body holds each Vertical Rotor vertical on a pair of Ball Bearing supports sealed by an Oil Seal, closed by a bolted Trough Lid that carries the upper bearings. Each rotor turns about a vertical axis, so its tines sweep horizontally through the soil rather than digging and lifting it the way a tiller does. A Rotor Spur Gear on every rotor meshes with its neighbours, so the rotors turn in alternating directions: this counter-rotation throws soil between adjacent rotors and cancels the side forces that would otherwise pull the machine off line. The gears run in an oil bath inside the trough, which keeps them cool and quiet through long days.

Driveline from the PTO

Power comes from the tractor through the PTO Drive Line. A telescoping PTO Drive Shaft with universal joints carries drive to the Central Gearbox, where a Helical Gear Pair of bevel gears in a Gearbox Housing turns the horizontal PTO drive ninety degrees into the vertical drive the rotors need. Inside the gearbox a Input Shaft takes the PTO drive and a Output Pinion drives the centre rotor of the trough, from which the meshed Rotor Spur Gear train spreads motion to every other rotor. A Slip Clutch in the line slips if a rotor jams on a buried object, protecting the gears and the tractor PTO from shock loads, with an Oil Seal keeping the gearbox oil in.

Tines and how the soil is worked

The cutting is done by the Tine Set. Each rotor carries two hardened Harrow Tine blades in a Tine Holder, locked by a Tine Pin so they can be swapped quickly as they wear. As the rotors spin, the tines rake through the soil and the counter-rotating pairs pass the soil back and forth between them, shattering clods into a fine even tilth. The working speed of the tines is set by PTO speed and gearing, so the operator can make a coarser or finer seedbed by changing forward speed without changing how hard the tines work, since the rotors keep spinning at the same rate.

Roller, depth, and edges

Behind the rotors the Crumbler Roller does two jobs at once. Its Roller Cage, a bar cage or packer ring roller on a Roller Axle, crumbles any remaining clods and firms the loosened surface so the seedbed is consolidated rather than fluffy, which gives seed good contact with moist soil. A Mud Scraper keeps wet soil from caking on it. The roller also sets the working depth: because the rotor trough rests on the roller through the Depth Control linkage, raising the roller with the Depth Pin in its Depth Quadrant lowers the tines and deepens the work, and lowering it does the reverse, all carried on the Depth Arm arms.

At each end, a Side Plate confines the soil. Its Plate Body on a sprung Plate Arm loaded by a Coil Spring catches the soil flung sideways by the outer rotors and levels it back into the bed, so the finished surface is flat right to the edge of the pass and the next pass joins it cleanly.

Mounting, use, and limits

The harrow mounts through the Three-Point Hitch, whose Hitch Mast, Lower Link Pin pins, and Top Link Pin couple it to the tractor and lift it clear for transport and turns. Power harrows suit a wide range of soils and are often paired with a seed drill on the same frame so that seedbed preparation and sowing happen in one pass, which saves trips across the field and protects soil moisture. They are favoured where a clean, level, weed-free tilth is needed and where the soil should not be inverted, such as ahead of small-seeded vegetables, cereals, and grass. Their limits come from the driven design: they draw real power from the PTO, work the top layer only and so do not replace deeper tillage, and on very wet or sticky soil the tines and roller can smear and clog rather than crumble, so they work best on soil that is moist but not wet.
