Potato Planter

Product

Overview

A potato planter places seed potatoes at an even spacing and depth and forms the ridge the crop will grow in, all in one pass. Unlike a grain or vegetable planter it handles large, irregular, easily bruised seed pieces, so its metering is built around gently picking up one tuber at a time rather than singulating small seed. The machine holds the seed in a Seed Potato Hopper, lifts pieces with a Cup Belt Unit for each row, drops them into a furrow cut by a Furrow Opener, then closes and shapes the soil with a Ridging Body. A Fertilizer System system bands plant food beside the row, a Ground Drive ties spacing to distance traveled, and a Monitor and Control monitor reports planting quality to the cab.

The whole machine is carried and pulled by the Main Frame, which sets the working height and carries the row markers that keep passes straight. Getting the in-row spacing right matters because potatoes that are too close compete and yield small tubers, while gaps waste ground, so the metering and drive are the parts the operator dials in most carefully.

Frame and hitch

The Main Frame is a welded Frame Weldment that ties the hopper, picking units, openers, and drive into one rigid structure. It connects to the tractor through a Hitch and rides on Support Wheel units that hold it at planting height. A folding Row Marker on each side scribes a line in the soil so the next pass lines up, keeping row spacing even across the field, which later matters for the harvester that has to straddle those same rows.

Holding and feeding the seed

The Seed Potato Hopper is a large Hopper Bin that holds several hundred kilograms of cut or whole seed pieces. Because bruised seed rots, the hopper feeds gently: a Feed Belt carries pieces toward the picking units, a Feed Gate sets how deep the pool of seed sits over each cup belt, and a slow Agitator Paddle keeps the pieces moving without crushing them. A Fill Sensor warns the operator before a section runs out so a row is not left unplanted.

The cup belt picking unit

Each row is served by a Cup Belt Unit. An endless Cup Belt carries a row of Pick-Up Cup units down through the pool of seed pieces; each cup is sized to lift exactly one tuber. The belt runs over Belt Pulley units, kept tight by a Belt Tensioner, and a Doubles Eliminator shakes off any second piece a cup picked up so each drop is a single seed. At the top of its travel each cup tips its tuber into the furrow. A Seed Sensor watches for empty cups so the monitor can report misses, which the operator uses to judge whether the feed depth or belt speed needs adjusting.

Opening, covering, and ridging

A Furrow Opener runs ahead of each drop point. An Opener Shovel cuts a deep furrow, two Side Disc units hold the walls open, and a Depth Wheel sets how deep the seed lands. After the tuber drops in, the Ridging Body closes the soil over it: two Covering Disc units pull soil in, a Ridge Former molds it into the ridge profile, and a Ridge Press Wheel firms the ridge to a steady shape. The ridge is not cosmetic: it gives the developing tubers room to grow without breaking the surface and turning green, and it sheds water away from the seed piece.

Fertilizer placement

The Fertilizer System system puts granular plant food where the new roots will find it. A Fertilizer Hopper feeds a Fertilizer Meter on each row, and a Banding Spout bands the fertilizer to the side of the seed rather than in contact with it, since direct contact can burn the sprouting tuber. The meters are driven from the same ground source as the planting units so the fertilizer rate tracks the area covered.

Drive, control, and use

Spacing has to stay constant regardless of tractor speed, so the Ground Drive takes its motion from a Land Drive Wheel running on the soil. That wheel turns the Spacing Gearbox, which drives each cup belt through a Drive Chain so the cups pass the drop point at a rate set by distance traveled. In-row spacing is changed with the Sprocket Set or the gearbox ratio. From the cab the Monitor and Control monitor shows spacing quality, skips, doubles, and area planted on its Cab Monitor, and on planters with electric drive a Belt Speed Motor can fine-tune each belt to correct spacing on the move. Potato planters are used wherever potatoes are grown at scale, from two-row units behind a small tractor to eight-row machines on large farms, and the even stand and well-formed ridge they create set up the crop for uniform tuber size and clean mechanical harvest.
