Precision Row Crop Planter

Product

Overview

A precision row crop planter places single seeds at an exact spacing and depth across many rows at once. It is built for crops that pay for accurate stands such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and sunflower, where an evenly spaced plant population yields more than a crowded or gappy one. The machine spreads a row of identical Row Unit assemblies along a wide Toolbar and Frame, feeds them from a central Bulk Seed Delivery, and uses a Vacuum System so each meter can pick up one seed at a time. A Liquid Fertilizer System system bands starter beside the seed, and the whole job is run and watched from the cab through the Control and Monitor.

What sets a precision planter apart from a grain drill or air seeder is singulation: instead of metering seed by volume, it isolates and drops one seed at a known interval, so plant spacing in the row is uniform. That uniformity is the reason these planters carry so much sensing and per-row control, and why their row units are far more complex than a simple opener.

The row unit

Each Row Unit is a complete planting machine in miniature, mounted to the toolbar through a Parallel Linkage so it rides up and down with the ground while staying level. Ahead of the opener a Row Cleaner uses toothed Cleaner Wheel units to sweep residue off the row. A Double-Disc Opener opener then cuts a clean V-furrow with two angled Opener Disc discs, and a Seed Firmer presses each seed into the furrow bottom. A pair of Gauge Wheel units set the planting depth by riding the surface, and behind the furrow two Closing Wheel units push soil back over the seed and firm it.

Metering and singulation

The heart of the row unit is the Seed Meter. A perforated Seed Disc turns through a pool of seed; a vacuum behind the disc, held by the Vacuum Seal inside the Meter Housing, pulls one seed against each hole. A Singulator brush knocks off any doubles so each hole carries exactly one seed. The disc is turned by an electric Meter Motor whose speed sets the seed interval independent of ground speed. When a hole reaches the release point the vacuum is cut and the seed falls into the Seed Tube, where a Seed Tube Body guides it to the furrow and a Seed Sensor counts it. The sensor reports skips and doubles to the cab, which is how the operator knows the meter is singulating well.

Down-force and depth

Even depth across changing soil takes active down-force. Each row carries a Down-Force Actuator system whose Down-Force Air Spring air spring adds or removes weight on the move, while a Load Cell reads how much weight the gauge wheels carry. If the gauge wheels start to lift, the system has too little down-force and seeds will be shallow; if they carry too much, the soil compacts. The controller holds a target gauge-wheel load so each seed lands at the set depth whether the ground is soft or firm.

Seed supply and fertilizer

Filling every row by hand would be slow, so the Bulk Seed Delivery uses central Bulk Seed Tank tanks and a Seed Blower to push seed through Delivery Hose runs to a Mini-Hopper on each row unit, keeping the meters full without stopping. Alongside the seed, the Liquid Fertilizer System system puts starter where the young roots can reach it: a Fertilizer Pump meters liquid from the Fertilizer Tank through a Fertilizer Manifold and a Row Orifice on each row, banded a short distance from the seed so it feeds the plant without burning the seedling.

Vacuum supply

All the meters draw from one Vacuum System. A hydraulic Vacuum Fan Motor spins the Vacuum Fan, whose Vacuum Impeller pulls air through every Vacuum Hose back from the meters. A Pressure Sensor reads the vacuum level, which the operator sets to suit seed size and weight: too little vacuum drops seeds and leaves skips, too much holds doubles. Getting the vacuum right is a key part of dialing in good singulation before a field is planted.

Control, transport, and use

From the cab the Control and Monitor sets population and watches the job. A Row Controller drives each meter motor and reports its sensor, a GPS Receiver supplies speed and position, and the Cab Display shows singulation, spacing, population, and coverage maps. Per-row control lets the planter shut off rows on headlands and already-planted ground to avoid double-planting. For the road the Transport System system folds the wings on Fold Cylinder units and carries the machine on Transport Wheel units within legal width. Precision planters dominate corn and soybean ground because the even, accurately placed stand they create translates directly into yield, and their per-row sensing lets one operator plant dozens of rows while knowing the quality of every one.
