Grain Combine

Product

Overview

A combine harvester does in one pass what once took several machines and many hands: it cuts the standing crop, threshes the grain out of the heads, separates the grain from the straw, cleans the chaff away, and stores the clean grain in a tank for unloading. The name comes from combining these steps into a single self-propelled machine. The unit described here is a conventional straw-walker combine, the layout that still suits wheat, barley, and other small-grain cereals across most of the world.

Grain follows a defined route. The Grain Header cuts and gathers the crop, the Feeder House lifts it to the Threshing Unit, the Separation Unit shakes out the grain still trapped in straw, the Cleaning Shoe blows the chaff away, and the Grain Tank & Unloading stores the result. All of it is driven by one Diesel Engine, propelled by the Drivetrain, and run from the Operator Cab.

Header and Gathering

The Grain Header is the wide front platform that meets the crop first. A reciprocating Cutter Bar slices the stems close to the ground: triangular sickle sections on the Knife Section Bar bar shear the crop against fixed Knife Guard points, driven by a Wobble Drive that turns rotation into the side-to-side knife stroke. Above the knife, the Pickup Reel rotates to pull the crop onto the cutter bar and back, its Reel Bat tines cam-controlled so they release the crop cleanly. A full-width Cross Auger then moves the cut crop to the center, where Retractable Fingers elements feed it into the feeder house throat. Headers are interchangeable, from 4.5 to 12 m wide, and a different front is used for maize or for picking up windrowed crop.

Feeder House

The Feeder House is the conveyor that lifts the crop mat from the header up to the drum. Steel Feeder Slat bars on a Feeder Chain drag the crop up an inclined duct. The whole Feeder Housing pivots so the header can be raised and lowered on the hydraulics. A recessed Stone Trap sits at the bottom of the duct to catch stones before they reach the drum, since a stone in the threshing chamber can wreck the rasp bars and concave.

Threshing

Threshing is where the grain is rubbed free of the heads. The Threshing Drum is a fast-spinning cylinder carrying corrugated Rasp Bar elements. The crop is forced through the narrow gap between this drum and the Concave, a curved grate below it. The rubbing action knocks the grain loose, and most of it falls straight through the concave openings to the grain pan. Drum speed and concave clearance are the two main settings the operator tunes for each crop, so the Drum Drive uses a Variator Sheave to change drum speed steplessly. Behind the drum, a Stripper Beater strips the straw mat off and passes it to the separation section.

Separation and Cleaning

Not all the grain falls through the concave; some stays caught in the straw. The Separation Unit recovers it. Four to six Straw Walker trays oscillate on the Walker Crankshaft, tumbling the straw so trapped grain sifts down through the saw-toothed Walker Tray while the straw works its way out the back. A Straw Chopper at the rear cuts and spreads the straw across the field, its swinging Chopper Knife blades shearing against fixed counter-knives.

The grain and short chaff that fall through both the concave and the walkers land on the Cleaning Shoe. A Grain Pan carries the mix rearward and spreads it across the sieves. The Cleaning Fan blows a tunable air blast up through the Chaffer Sieve and the finer Lower Sieve, lifting the light chaff out the back while heavy grain drops through. Getting the fan speed and sieve openings right is the difference between clean grain and either grain lost out the back or chaff in the tank.

Grain Handling

Clean grain reaching the bottom of the shoe is lifted by the Clean-Grain Elevator, a paddle chain that scoops it up to the Grain Tank Body. Heads that came through unthreshed are caught separately and sent by the Tailings Return auger back to the drum for a second pass. The Grain Tank Body holds 8 to 14 m3, and when it fills, the operator swings out the Unloading Auger and empties into a trailer or chaser bin, often without stopping, at 90 to 160 L per second.

Power and Propulsion

The Diesel Engine is a turbocharged common-rail diesel of 200 to 350 kW. It drives the processing belts directly and powers the Drivetrain, which is hydrostatic: a Hydrostatic Pump feeds wheel motors so the operator gets stepless speed and direction from one lever. Power reaches the ground through planetary Final Drive units on the large front Drive Wheel pair, while a hydraulically steered Steered Rear Axle gives tight headland turns. The Cooling Pack uses a self-cleaning rotary screen to keep chaff out of the radiator, a constant problem in a dusty harvest.

Cab and Electronics

The Operator Cab is sealed and pressurised against grain dust, with an air-suspension Seat Assembly and a single Multifunction Handle for ground speed, header height, and unloading. The Operation Monitor shows grain loss, throughput, and moisture, and a Yield & Moisture Sensor on the clean-grain elevator builds a yield map across the field. The Electrical System system runs at 12 V from a belt-driven Alternator, with the Wiring Harness and the Machine Controller tying the engine, drives, and processing settings together. Modern machines layer in automatic settings adjustment and guidance, but the underlying flow of cut, thresh, separate, clean, and store has been the shape of the combine for a century.
