Laser Land Leveler

Product

Overview

A laser land leveler grades a field to a single flat plane so that water spread across it for surface or flood irrigation runs evenly instead of pooling in low spots and stranding the high ones. A field that looks flat to the eye usually varies by tens of centimetres, which wastes water and gives uneven crops. This machine cuts the high ground, carries the soil, and drops it in the low ground, guided not by the operator's eye but by a laser plane that gives a true, field-wide reference of height. The result is land flat to within a couple of centimetres over many hectares.

The system has two halves that talk through light. A Laser Transmitter on a tripod at the field edge spins a beam into a level reference plane. On the machine, a Receiver Mast on a mast senses that plane and tells the Control Box whether the cutting edge is high or low. The control then drives the Hydraulic Lift to raise or lower the Scraper Bucket, all carried on the Drawbar Frame and pulled by the tractor through the Tractor Hitch.

The scraper bucket

The Scraper Bucket does the earthmoving. It is a wide, shallow Bucket Shell with a hardened bolt-on Cutting Edge along the front. When the bucket is lowered into high ground, the edge shaves a thin layer of soil that rolls back into the shell. Side Plate panels keep the load from spilling sideways and a Spill Guard holds it at the back. When the machine reaches a low spot the bucket is raised slightly and the soil flows out, filling the hollow. Over many passes the cut soil migrates from the rises into the dips until the surface is flat.

Frame and the long reference base

The Drawbar Frame is built long on purpose. Its Main Beam spans from the hitch to the Rear Wheel pair on the Rear Axle, so the bucket sits well behind the tractor and ahead of the wheels. A long base averages out small bumps that would throw off a short blade, giving the laser control a steadier platform to work from. The Lift Arm arms carry the bucket and are what the hydraulic cylinder moves to set its depth. Even without the laser, this long towed-scraper geometry already smooths a field better than a short blade; the laser is what makes it flat to an absolute plane rather than just smooth.

Hydraulics

The Hydraulic Lift turn control signals into bucket motion. A double-acting Lift Cylinder raises and lowers the bucket, fed through a Solenoid Valve that the control box pulses many times a second. Oil comes from the tractor remotes through a Hose Set and Quick Coupler fittings, with an O-Ring Set sealing the cylinder. In automatic mode the operator just drives back and forth while the valve does the cutting and filling; the operator's job is to choose the path and keep the bucket from overloading.

The laser plane

The reference comes from the Laser Transmitter. A Laser Diode feeds a Rotating Prism spun by a Servo Motor so the beam sweeps out a thin disc of light. A Self-Leveling Base holds that disc truly horizontal, or tips it to a set slope when a field is meant to drain one way. The unit sits on a Tripod above the dust and crop and runs off a Battery Pack. This single plane covers a circle hundreds of metres across, so one setup serves a whole field.

On the machine the Receiver Mast reads that plane. The Mast Tube sets the Receiver Head at the right height, and inside the head a Photocell Ring of stacked photodiodes detects exactly where the beam strikes through the Lens Window. The Receiver Board turns that into a high, on-grade, or low signal and sends it down the Mast Cable and Wire Bundle to the cab.

Control and field use

The Control Box closes the loop. Its Control Board and Microcontroller compare the receiver signal to the target grade and pulse the valve to bring the cutting edge back onto the laser plane, showing status on the Display. A Mode Switch lets the operator drop to manual lever control for trimming edges or moving between fields, with Connector links tying the harness together.

Laser leveling is done before planting on land that will be flood, furrow, or basin irrigated, where an even surface directly decides how evenly water and therefore the crop spread out. It is most valuable on rice, cotton, cane, and other field crops on large flat farms, and it is usually a periodic job, redone every few years as tillage and settling roughen the surface. The limits are that it shapes a single plane, so it cannot build the contours that some drainage or terraced layouts need, and very large cuts move a lot of soil and take many passes, which is slow and burns fuel. Once a field is laser-leveled, though, the water savings and the more uniform crop usually repay the work within a season or two.
