Vineyard Canopy Trimmer

Product

Overview

A vineyard canopy trimmer is a tractor implement that shears the foliage of a grapevine row into a flat, even hedge. Through the growing season vines push new shoots well past the top wire of the trellis. If left alone these shoots shade the fruit zone, slow air movement through the canopy, and tangle with the next row. Trimming keeps the canopy to a defined width and height so sunlight and spray reach the grapes and the rows stay open for machinery.

The implement hangs from the tractor on a Three-Point Hitch and carries its cutting elements on a Carrier Frame. Two Vertical Cutter Bar units work the left and right sides of the canopy while a single Topping Cutter Bar levels the top. Every bar is a reciprocating sickle: a row of hardened knife sections slides back and forth across a row of fixed ledger fingers, shearing each shoot the way a hair clipper cuts. This design is preferred over rotary blades for green vine shoots because it leaves a clean cut rather than a bruised, frayed stub, and it throws far less debris.

The trimmer is sized to the row. Vertical bars typically reach 1.0 to 1.6 m of working height and the machine runs at 4 to 7 km/h, fast enough to cover a hectare in well under an hour on a 2.2 m row spacing.

How it works

The tractor lifts the implement with the Three-Point Hitch, a Category II linkage built around a Hitch A-Frame and pinned at the Lower Link Pin and Top Link Pin. A pair of Sway Stabiliser chains stop the unit swaying during transport on uneven ground.

The cutting head is positioned by the Carrier Frame. Its Parallelogram Arm pair keeps the vertical bars upright as the Reach Cylinder pushes them in toward the canopy or pulls them clear of the trellis posts. Pivots run on a Pivot Pin at each joint, supported by a Ball Bearing bush so the heavy bars swing freely. The topping bar height is set by the Height Cylinder, letting the operator hold a constant top profile across rolling rows.

Each bar is driven by its own Blade Drive Motor. A Orbital Hydraulic Motor turns a Eccentric Crank Disc whose offset pin gives a 30 mm throw. A Connecting Rod carries that motion to the Knife Drive Head at the end of the bar, which slides the whole knife row inside the Bar Spine Extrusion. The motor runs at 600 to 900 RPM, so the knives complete several hundred shearing cycles per minute. An Oil Seal keeps the motor sealed against vine sap and dust.

The cutting itself happens between a moving Knife Section and a fixed Ledger Finger. The serrated knife section grips each shoot and pulls it against the stainless ledger finger, where it shears at the gap. A Section Clamp holds each section flat so the knife and ledger stay in close contact, which is what keeps the cut clean as the blades wear.

Hydraulic system

The implement does not use the tractor remotes for the cutting drive. Instead a Gear Pump driven from the tractor PTO or a dedicated coupling supplies its own circuit, rated at 40 L/min and 180 bar. Oil is held in a Oil Reservoir with a return filter and drawn through the Control Valve Block, which splits flow between the blade motors and the positioning cylinders. A Relief Valve caps pressure at 200 bar to protect the bars if a knife jams on a trellis wire, and a Pressure Sensor reports circuit pressure back to the cab so the operator can see a blockage building. Connections use braided Hydraulic Hose Set hoses with an O-Ring Set sealing every fitting.

Cab controls

The operator works the trimmer from a In-Cab Control Box in the cab. A proportional Proportional Joystick commands the reach and height cylinders so the bars can be feathered around posts and end assemblies without stopping. A Switch Panel turns each blade circuit on or off and selects which bars are running, useful when only the top or only one side needs trimming. Inside the box an Microcontroller on a Bare PCB sequences the Relay outputs that switch the valve solenoids, fed by a Wire Bundle through sealed Connector plugs.

Guarding and debris

Spinning crank parts and exposed knife ends are covered by the Guard Set. Formed Sheet Metal Panel shrouds wrap the drive heads, and a Debris Deflector on each bar throws cut leaves down and away from the tractor wheels so they do not pack into the running gear. A Warning Decal Set set marks the rotation hazard and the pinch points at the parallel arms.

Materials and maintenance

The frame, mast and arms are box-section steel for stiffness under the side load of pushing into a dense canopy. Bar spines are aluminium extrusion to keep the reciprocating mass low, which reduces vibration at high stroke rates. Knife sections are hardened tool steel and the ledger fingers are stainless, both consumable items replaced when the cut starts to tear rather than shear.

Daily service is short: grease the Pivot Pin joints, check the knife-to-ledger gap, and clear vine debris from the deflectors. Knife sections are unbolted from the Bar Spine Extrusion individually, so a damaged section is swapped in the field without removing the whole bar. Hydraulic oil and the return filter are changed on an hours basis like any farm hydraulic circuit.

Trimmers are configured to the vineyard. A narrow trellis may run a single vertical bar per side at 1.2 m, while a tall vertical-shoot-positioned canopy uses the full 1.6 m bars plus the topper. The same Carrier Frame and Hydraulic System carry across these builds, with bar count and reach geometry set to the row.
