Orchard Tractor

Overview

An orchard tractor is a narrow, low-slung machine built to drive between rows of fruit trees, grape vines, and nursery stock without bruising fruit, snagging branches, or compacting the ground beside the trunks. Everything about it is shaped by the spacing of the rows it works in. The tractor documented here is 1,160 mm wide over the rear tires and 1,380 mm tall with the rollover bar folded, so it slips under low canopies and through gaps that a standard utility tractor cannot enter. Power comes from a 2.5 L turbocharged Diesel Engine rated at 55 kW. The engine drives a synchro-shuttle Transmission & PTO, an open-center Hydraulic System circuit, and a 540 rpm rear PTO Assembly that runs sprayers, mowers, and mulchers. A welded steel Chassis & Front Axle ties the major units together, and a foldable Low-Profile Canopy & ROPS protects the operator. The priorities are a tight turning radius, a low center of gravity for slope work, and clean flanks that do not catch foliage.

Engine and fuel

The Cylinder Block is cast iron with three wet Cylinder Liner bores, so a worn liner can be pulled and replaced instead of reboring the block. A forged Crankshaft rides on four Main Bearing Shell shells, and each Piston Assembly carries a three-piece Piston Ring Set. The Cylinder Head holds twelve valves driven by a single Camshaft through a Rocker Shaft Assembly. Fuel metering is electronic: a high-pressure High-Pressure Pump charges a Common Rail to roughly 1,600 bar, and three solenoid Fuel Injector units fire several times per stroke for a quiet, clean burn. A Turbocharger with an Inconel Turbine Wheel raises low-speed torque so the engine pulls hard at the 1,400 rpm where orchard work usually sits. Exhaust passes through a wall-flow Diesel Particulate Filter to meet emissions limits. Cooling is handled by the Cooling Pack, whose Water Pump and viscous Cooling Fan hold coolant near 82 C through the Thermostat.

Transmission, PTO, and four-wheel drive

A dual dry Clutch Assembly separates traction from PTO drive, so the operator can stop the tractor while a mounted sprayer keeps running. The 12-speed Gearbox uses Synchronizer Ring rings for clutchless ratio changes, and a hydraulic Power Shuttle Unit reverses direction without touching the gear lever, which matters at the end of every row. Drive splits to a Rear Axle with a Differential and planetary Final Drive hubs, and a Differential Lock ties the rear wheels together for traction on damp grass. Selectable four-wheel drive sends torque forward through the Center Driveshaft to a Front Drive Axle (4WD) whose CV Joint units let the steered wheels pull and turn at once. The PTO Assembly offers both a standard 540 and an economy 540E mode so light implements can run at lower engine speed.

Hydraulics and the three-point hitch

A tandem gear Hydraulic Pump feeds the open-center circuit at 45 L/min. The Lift Control Valve runs draft and position control on the rear lift, and a Pressure Relief Valve caps system pressure near 190 bar. Two Remote Valve outlets with ISO Hydraulic Quick Coupler connections power front loaders, tipping trailers, and folding sprayer booms. The Category I Three-Point Hitch carries a Top Link and two Lower Link Arm arms raised by a pair of Lift Cylinder rams for a lift capacity of 1,800 kg at the ball ends. A Leveling Box sets implement attitude, and a swinging Swinging Drawbar tows trailers and bins.

Steering, brakes, and safety

Steering is fully hydrostatic. The Steering Orbital Valve valve meters oil to a Steering Cylinder on the Front Axle Beam, so a tight lock-to-lock turn takes little effort even with the front wheels loaded. The oscillating beam pivots on a central Axle Pivot Pin to keep all four wheels on uneven orchard floor. Braking uses oil-immersed Wet Disc Brake Pack units sealed inside the axle, which shrug off dust and water and never need pad changes. Two Brake Pedal levers steer the tractor by braking one rear wheel, then lock together for road travel. A foldable ROPS Frame meets OECD rollover standards and drops on its ROPS Fold Hinge joints to clear low branches, while a suspended Operator Seat cushions the ride.

Materials and construction

The tractor uses cast iron for the block, Axle Housing, and Exhaust Manifold where rigidity and heat resistance matter. Gears, the Crankshaft, and the Ring & Pinion Set set are forged and case-hardened steel. Sheet steel forms the Fender panels and the Main Frame, which carries the engine and transmission as stressed members to save weight and height. Shared mechanical parts recur throughout: deep-groove Ball Bearing units in the alternator, water pump, axles, and turbocharger; Oil Seal and O-Ring Set elements at every shaft and hydraulic joint; standard Fastener Set hardware; and Helical Gear Pair sets in the pumps and final drives. A 12 V Electrical System system with an Engine Control Unit and Instrument Cluster ties the sensors and lights together through a single Wire Bundle.

Variants and use

Buyers choose between a sun-and-rain Low-Profile Canopy & ROPS and a fully enclosed pressurized cab for spraying, where filtered air protects the operator from chemical drift. Narrower vineyard versions drop under 1,000 mm wide for hillside grape rows, while wider orchard versions trade some clearance for stability and ballast capacity using the front Front Ballast Weight. Adjustable Wheel Rim tracks let the same machine match different row spacings. In daily work the tractor mows the alley between rows, hauls picking bins on a Swinging Drawbar trailer, runs an air-blast sprayer off the rear PTO Output Shaft, and lifts mounted hedge trimmers on the Three-Point Hitch. Low height, narrow track, and a tight turning circle let it finish a block of trees that a full-size tractor would damage.
