Cane Harvester

Product

Overview

A cane harvester turns a field of standing sugarcane into clean, mill-ready billets in a single pass. It tops the cane, cuts it at the ground, conveys it back through the machine, chops it into short pieces, blows the leafy trash away, and elevates the clean billets into a haul-out bin running alongside. This chopper-type harvester replaced hand cutting and whole-stalk machines across most cane regions because it delivers consistent billets that feed directly into the mill, and it works day and night through the crushing season.

The cane moves through the machine in sequence. The Crop Topper removes the leafy tops, the Base Cutter severs the stalk at ground level, the Feed Roller Train carries it rearward, the Chopper Drums cuts it into billets, the Cleaning System blows trash off, and the Billet Elevator loads the bin. The Diesel Engine drives the Hydraulic System that power every function, and the Track Undercarriage carries the machine on soft ground.

Topper

Sugar is concentrated in the lower stalk, so the leafy green top is waste that should not reach the mill. The Crop Topper removes it first. A finned Top Gatherer, driven by the Topper Motor, collects the tops and feeds them into a rotating Topper Knife that shears them off. A Height-Sensing Arm rides the crop canopy and automatically adjusts topping height as the cane varies across the field, so the machine takes the leaf without cutting away usable stalk.

Base Cutter

The Base Cutter is the heart of the front end. Two counter-rotating Base Cutter Disc units, each fitted with replaceable Base Cutter Blade edges, are set just below ground level to sever the cane at the root. A clean cut here matters beyond this harvest: sugarcane regrows from the stool, and a ragged or shattered base cut damages the ratoon and reduces next year's crop. The two discs are driven by the Base Cutter Gearbox, and a Knockdown Roller ahead of them bends the standing cane forward so it enters the machine butt-first. An automatic height control keeps the cutter at a consistent depth to balance a clean cut against picking up dirt.

Feed Train and Chopper

Cut cane is carried rearward by the Feed Roller Train, a series of opposed Feed Roller pairs. The first pair, the Butt-Lifter Rollers, lifts the cut butt off the ground and starts the stalk into the train. Lower floor rollers carry the cane while spring-loaded upper rollers press down on it, and the tumbling action shakes loose soil out before chopping. The Feed Drive keeps all rollers in time with ground speed so the flow stays even.

At the back of the feed train, the Chopper Drums cuts the cane into billets. Two Chopper Drum units carrying hardened Chopper Blade edges rotate in opposition, shearing the cane between them into pieces of 150 to 300 mm. The Chopper Drive is a high-torque hydraulic motor and gearbox, since chopping a steady stream of cane is one of the larger power draws on the machine. Billet length is set to suit the mill that will crush the cane.

Cleaning System

The chopped cane is mixed with leaf, tops missed by the topper, and dirt, all of which the mill does not want. The Cleaning System removes it with airflow. The Primary Extractor is a large fan above the chopper: its Extractor Fan Rotor rotor, carrying wide Fan Blade elements, pulls the light leaf trash up and out through the Extractor Hood, while the heavier billets fall through to the elevator. A Secondary Extractor at the top of the elevator gives a final clean before the billets drop into the bin. Fan speed, set through the Extractor Motor, is the operator's main trade-off: more airflow gives cleaner cane but also blows some good cane away, so the setting is tuned to the price the mill pays for cleanliness against the cane lost.

Elevator

The clean billets are loaded by the Billet Elevator, a slat-and-chain conveyor. The Elevator Chain carries Elevator Slat bars that lift the billets up the Elevator Frame, which slews and tilts so the operator can fill a bin towed by a tractor running alongside or behind. A hydraulic Discharge Flap at the discharge end aims the flow into the bin and stops spillage when swapping a full bin for an empty one.

Power, Tracks, and Hydraulics

The Diesel Engine is a turbocharged common-rail diesel of 250 to 400 kW. Almost everything on the machine is hydraulically driven, so the engine's main job is turning the pumps of the Hydraulic System system. Three variable-displacement Hydraulic Pump units feed the Control Valve Bank bank that powers the cutters, feed train, chopper, fans, elevator, and tracks, drawing from the Hydraulic Tank through the Hydraulic Oil Cooler. The machine rides on the Track Undercarriage, using a steel-reinforced Rubber Track rather than tyres because cane is grown on heavy, often wet soil where flotation and low ground pressure protect both the field and the cane stools.

Cab and Electronics

The Operator Cab is sealed and pressurised against the heavy dust and trash of cane harvesting, with a low front for a clear view of the base cutter. The operator works a single Multifunction Joystick for speed, cutter height, topper, and elevator slew, and the Operation Monitor shows machine data and runs the Base-Cutter Height Sensor base-cutter control. The Electrical System system runs at 24 V from a belt-driven Alternator, with the Wiring Harness and Machine Controller coordinating the engine, hydraulics, and the cutting and cleaning automation. Wide Field Light Set support the night harvesting that is normal in cane, where the cut crop must reach the mill quickly before its sugar content falls.
