Vegetable Transplanting Machine

Product

Overview

A vegetable transplanting machine sets young seedlings, grown as plugs in cell trays, into prepared field beds at an even spacing and depth. Many vegetables are started in a nursery and moved to the field as small plants rather than sown directly, because transplanting gives a head start on weeds, a uniform stand, and better use of expensive hybrid seed. The machine mechanizes the slow, stooping work of setting plants by hand: workers ride along feeding plugs into a Planting Unit for each row, while the machine opens the furrow, places the plug upright, waters it, and firms the soil around it.

The riders sit at the Operator Station with plug trays within reach on the Seedling Tray Rack. As the machine creeps forward on its Ground Drive, each worker drops a plug into a moving carrier, which sets it in the ground; a Watering System system drenches each plant, and a Press Wheel System firms the soil so the plant stands straight and the roots make contact. The whole machine rides on the Main Frame behind a slow-moving tractor.

Frame and carrying

The Main Frame is a welded Frame Weldment that carries the planting units, operator seats, and water tank. It hangs on the tractor through a Three-Point Hitch and rides at planting height on Support Wheel units. When parked it rests on Parking Stand units so it stays upright while unhitched. The frame is built low and open so workers can sit close to the ground and reach both the trays and the planting carrier without strain.

The planting unit

Each Planting Unit turns a plug handed to it into a planted seedling. The operator loads a plug into a Plant Carrier, a rotating Carrier Disc that carries a ring of Plant Finger jaws. Each finger grips a plug by its root ball and carries it around until a Release Cam opens it over the furrow. Ahead of that point a Furrow Opener with an Opener Shoe and two Side Plate units has opened a furrow deep enough to set the plug upright, with a Depth Wheel setting the depth. The released plug drops through the Drop Tube into the furrow, and a Spacing Cam tied to ground travel times each release so plants land at an even interval down the row.

Holding the seedlings

A steady supply of plugs keeps the operators planting without stopping. The Seedling Tray Rack holds full trays on Tray Shelf units at hand height, kept in place by Tray Guide rails so they do not slide off over rough ground. As each tray empties, the worker drops it into the Empty Tray Bin and pulls the next, so spent trays do not litter the bed. Plug supply is the usual limit on speed, since the machine can only go as fast as the operators can pull and place plants.

The operator station

Because plants are fed by hand, the Operator Station is built for workers to ride comfortably for long shifts. Each rider has a low Operator Seat and a Footrest close to the planting carrier, a Grab Rail to hold over bumps, and a Sun Canopy for shade. The riders face the carrier so that loading a plug is a short, repeatable motion, which is what lets a crew keep up a steady planting rate across a long field.

Watering and pressing

Two steps decide whether a transplant survives: water at the root and firm soil around it. The Watering System system carries transplant water, often mixed with starter fertilizer, in a Water Tank, and a Water Pump feeds a Dosing Valve timed to give each plug a measured shot through a Drench Nozzle. Behind each planting unit the Press Wheel System runs angled Press Wheel units on a Press Arm, loaded by a Press Spring, to close soil firmly against the root ball from both sides so the plant stands upright and the roots are not left in an air pocket.

Drive and use

In-row spacing must hold regardless of how fast the tractor crawls, so the Ground Drive takes its motion from a Land Drive Wheel on the soil. That wheel turns the Spacing Gearbox, which drives each carrier through a Drive Chain so plug release is keyed to distance traveled. Spacing is changed at the gearbox to suit the crop. These machines are used across vegetable operations to set brassicas such as cabbage and broccoli, along with tomato, pepper, lettuce, and many others, replacing the slow hand setting of plants. They run slowly because every plant is placed individually, but they give a uniform, well-watered, upright stand that establishes fast and competes well against weeds, which is the point of transplanting in the first place.
