No-Till Seed Drill

Product

Overview

A no-till seed drill plants a crop directly into the residue of the previous one without plowing or working the soil first. By leaving the soil structure and the old crop cover in place, no-till farming holds moisture, slows erosion, and saves the fuel and passes that tillage would cost. The challenge is mechanical: the drill has to cut through tough surface residue and place seed into firm, undisturbed ground, which is far harder than seeding worked soil. That is why a no-till drill is built heavy and loaded with down-force, and why its Disc Opener Unit openers use sharp discs rather than the shovels of a conventional drill.

The machine carries a row of disc openers on a heavy Main Frame, feeds them from long Seed and Fertilizer Boxes hoppers through a ground-driven Metering System system, presses each opener into the soil with the Down-Pressure System system, and firms every slot closed with a Press Wheel Rank. For the road, the Transport System system lifts and folds it.

Frame and weight

Penetrating untilled soil takes weight, so the Main Frame is a stiff box-section Frame Weldment that can carry heavy Frame Ballast without flexing. Frame flex matters because if the bar bows, the center openers run shallower than the ends and the stand becomes uneven. The frame rides on Frame Wheel units that set the rank height, and it pulls from a Pull Hitch sized for the high draft of cutting through firm ground. The weight that lets the discs penetrate is the single biggest difference between a no-till drill and a drill made for worked soil.

The disc opener unit

Each Disc Opener Unit does its work in sequence as the drill moves forward. A fluted Coulter runs first to slice through surface trash so the residue does not get pushed into the slot, which would hold the seed away from soil. Behind it the Disc Opener cuts a narrow slot with a single angled Opener Disc, kept clean by a spring Disc Scraper, and the Seed Tube guides seed down behind the disc. A Seed Firmer presses the seed to the bottom of the slot, a Gauge Wheel beside the disc sets the depth, and a Press Wheel closes the slot. The whole unit swings on a Pivot Arm so it can follow the ground contour while the down-pressure holds it to depth.

Seed and fertilizer storage

The Seed and Fertilizer Boxes runs the width of the drill. A main Seed Hopper holds the crop seed, a Fertilizer Hopper holds dry fertilizer metered alongside, and a Small-Seed Box handles fine grass or legume seed that plants shallow. Inside the larger hoppers a slow Agitator keeps seed flowing so it does not bridge over the meter outlets. A Hopper Lid keeps moisture and chaff out, and a Low-Level Sensor warns the operator before a hopper empties so a strip is not left unseeded.

Metering the seed

Seeding rate on a drill is set by distance, not time, so the Metering System system is driven from the ground. A Ground Drive Wheel running on the soil turns the Meter Drive Shaft through a Rate Gearbox, and the shaft turns a Meter Roller under each opening. Each fluted roller meters seed by volume per turn, so the amount planted per hectare stays the same whether the tractor speeds up or slows down. Rate is set by changing the gearbox ratio, then checked by cranking the Calibration Crank a measured amount and weighing the seed that comes out, so the drill is calibrated to the actual seed lot before planting begins.

Down-pressure and slot closing

Getting the disc into firm ground and keeping it there is the job of the Down-Pressure System system. A Down-Pressure Cylinder transfers frame weight onto the openers, a Opener Spring adds individual load to each one, and an Accumulator holds the pressure steady as the openers ride over bumps. A Pressure Sensor lets the operator read and set the load. After the seed is placed, the Press Wheel Rank runs a trailing rank of Closing Press Wheel units, each loaded by a Press Spring, to firm the slot closed. Good closure is critical in no-till because an open slot lets the seed dry out and germinate poorly.

Transport and use

For the road the Transport System system raises the openers on Lift Cylinder units, folds the wings with Fold Cylinder units, and carries the drill on Transport Wheel units within legal width. No-till drills are used across large dryland and conservation-tillage operations to plant wheat, soybeans, cover crops, and pasture into standing stubble. They cost more and pull harder than a conventional drill, but they let a grower plant without the time, fuel, and soil loss of tillage, which is why they are central to conservation farming wherever moisture and erosion are concerns.
