Floater Fertilizer Spreader
ProductOverview
A floater fertilizer spreader is a self-propelled truck built to carry several tonnes of dry fertilizer across a field on wide low-pressure tires, broadcasting product evenly behind it through spinning discs. The name comes from those flotation tires, which let the loaded machine drive on soft or wet ground without rutting or compacting soil the way a narrow-tired truck would. Floaters cover ground fast, which matters because dry fertilizer is often applied in tight pre-plant or top-dress windows over large acreages.
The machine pairs a heavy-duty truck chassis with an agricultural spreader body. The truck part has to move 10 to 25 tonnes gross at field and road speeds; the spreader part has to meter that product out at an accurate, often map-varied rate and throw it 18 to 30 m to each side in an even pattern. Fertilizer is corrosive, so material choice runs through the whole product-contact path.
Floater Chassis
The Floater Chassis is a heavy Frame Rails on three Axle units carrying six Flotation Tire wheels. The very wide low-pressure tires are the defining feature: they spread the loaded weight over a large contact patch, keeping ground pressure low enough to drive on wet fields. A Walking-Beam Suspension of tandem walking beams equalizes load across the rear tires over uneven ground, and a Air Brakes air system handles road transport between fields. Major joints use a Fastener Set sized for the loaded weight.
Powertrain
The Powertrain uses a diesel Diesel Engine of 200 to 300 kW through an automatic Transmission and a two-range Transfer Case that gives slow field gears for spreading and high gears for road travel. Power reaches the axles through a Drive Shaft pair. A Cooling Pack pack handles full-load heat and a Fuel Tank holds a day of fuel.
Spreader Bed
The Spreader Bed is a welded 304 stainless Bed Shell in a V profile, built from corrosion-resistant Sheet Metal Panel sections because dry fertilizer attacks ordinary steel quickly. A polyethylene Bed Liner cuts friction and speeds clean-out between products, a roll-tarp Bed Cover keeps rain off the hygroscopic load, and a rear Metering Gate sets how deep a layer of product passes onto the conveyor.
Metering Conveyor and Spinner Spreader
Product reaches the discs through the Metering Conveyor. A wide Conveyor Belt or drag chain runs over a Conveyor Roller pair, driven by a variable Conveyor Motor through a Drive Belt, with a Conveyor Sensor reporting belt speed back to the controller. The conveyor and gate together set how much product flows rearward.
At the rear, the Spinner Spreader flings that product wide. A Flow Divider splits the stream evenly onto two Spinner Disc discs, each driven by a Spinner Motor and turning on a Ball Bearing. Adjustable Spread Vane blades on the discs tune the throw distance and pattern, and the whole unit mounts on a Spinner Frame. Counter-rotating spinners give a wide overlapping pattern so adjacent passes blend into a uniform rate across the field.
Rate Control
The Rate Control System system makes application accurate and variable. A Rate Controller built on an Microcontroller reads a GNSS Receiver receiver and a set of bed Load Cell units, then varies conveyor and spinner speed to hold the target rate and to follow a prescription map that changes rate by zone. The operator works from an in-cab In-Cab Terminal, which also logs as-applied maps for records and reorder. Load-cell weighing checks actual product used against the calculated rate, catching calibration drift.
Cab and Hydraulics
The Operator Cab sits forward for visibility over the spreader, on a Cab Shell with wide glass, an air-suspension Operator Seat, a control Control Armrest and a dust-filtering Cab HVAC unit. The Hydraulic System system drives conveyor, spinners and gate from an engine-driven Hydraulic Pump through a proportional Valve Bank, fed from a Oil Reservoir sealed with an O-Ring Set.
Use and Variants
Floaters are run by retailers and custom applicators who cover many farms in a season. Stainless construction and quick liner clean-out let one machine switch between dry fertilizers, lime and sometimes dry spreadable product within a day. Variants include lime-specific high-rate beds, twin-bin floaters that blend two products on the go for variable-rate prescriptions, and air-boom conversions that place product in tubes rather than broadcasting it for tighter pattern control near sensitive boundaries. Common options are section control to shut spinners at field edges, automatic spinner-speed compensation, and reverse cameras for road transport.
