Autopsy Table Product
Overview
An autopsy table is a specialized forensic and pathology examination platform designed to accommodate full-body post-mortem examination and necropsy procedures. Unlike a standard surgical table, an autopsy table emphasizes drainage, ventilation, and operator visibility of the entire body surface and viscera. The Stainless Steel Basin Top comprises a large stainless steel work surface perforated with drainage holes and sloped toward a central collection point. The integrated Water Supply & Drainage System allows thorough washing and rinsing of tissues and organs during evisceration. An aggressive Downdraft Ventilation System system—typically downdraft-type—captures aerosols, odors, and putrefactive gases, protecting the pathologist and laboratory staff.
The table structure stands on a Support Frame & Base supported by locking casters, permitting positioning within the autopsy suite. A Height Adjustment Mechanism mechanism allows the work surface to rise and lower, accommodating the examiner's reach and fatigue. Modern autopsy tables incorporate Overhead Illumination overhead, eliminating shadows in deep body cavities, and electrical outlets for powered instruments such as saws, drills, and specimen photography equipment.
Work surface and drainage
The Stainless Steel Basin Top is the operational core of the table. The stainless steel panel is precision-formed with a 2° slope running to a low point in one corner or along one edge, where a Drain Grid & Strainer collects tissue fragments and maintains a perforated surface for fluid passage. The Containment Lip Edge—a 5 cm containment rim—prevents fluids from spilling onto the floor. Beneath the basin, a Floor Trap (P-Trap) and sump chamber collect rinse water and tissue washings; a Waste Extraction Pump automatically activates when liquid level rises, pumping waste to the facility's drain system or to a temporary biohazard waste container (the Waste Disposal System).
The Water Supply & Drainage System supplies hot and cold water via a Hot/Cold Mixing Valve set to 38–50°C. An overhead Overhead Rinse Fixture with flexible gooseneck and push-button spray head allows the pathologist to rinse organs, viscera, and body tissues during dissection. The water flow is gentle enough to avoid splashing yet powerful enough to clear blood clots and tissue fragments from the work surface.
Ventilation and containment
A critical feature of the autopsy table is the Downdraft Ventilation System system. Located beneath or integrated into the basin, an Exhaust Centrifugal Blower powered by an EC motor draws 500–800 CFM of air downward through the perforated work surface. This downdraft captures aerosols released during cutting, suctioning, and evisceration—especially putrefactive gases from decomposed remains, which present both odor and biohazard concerns. The exhaust first passes through a HEPA Filter Cartridge (H13 grade, 99.95% at 0.3 µm) to remove particulates and microorganisms, then through an Activated Carbon Filter filter stage to neutralize odors and volatile organic compounds.
The downdraft flow is variable-speed, controlled by the pathologist via a bedside control knob or wall-mounted rheostat, allowing adjustment based on decomposition state and procedural requirements. Intake air is drawn from the room ceiling via the Exhaust Ducting, which terminates through an external wall with a rain hood, preventing contaminant backflow into the facility.
Height adjustment and ergonomics
The Height Adjustment Mechanism motorized screw-drive system lifts the entire basin and work surface from 70 cm to 100 cm height. A handheld Height Control Pendant pendant with up/down buttons and an LED height readout allows the pathologist to continuously adjust height without bending excessively or walking away from the body. The system automatically cuts power at end-of-stroke limit switches, preventing over-travel or under-travel that could damage the mechanism.
The autopsy-table-base-frame is welded steel tubing, powder-coated for durability and easy cleaning. Four heavy-duty casters with locking brakes permit repositioning the table within the autopsy suite while keeping it stable during procedures. The pedestal design keeps table height accessible while allowing staff to approach from multiple angles.
Illumination and documentation
Two adjustable Overhead Illumination LED surgical lights mounted on articulated arms above the table eliminate shadows in the operative field. These are 5000 K color-balanced lights (mimicking daylight), each producing 40,000 lux at 1 m, with dimmable intensity to reduce glare and eye strain during multi-hour procedures. The arms allow positioning the lights directly over the area of interest, whether abdominal cavity, thorax, or head dissection.
Many modern autopsy tables include provisions for secure mounting of photographic or video equipment, permitting documentation of findings for medical-legal evidence or educational records.
Regulatory and safety context
Autopsy tables must comply with EN 12015 (dissection tables for mortuary/laboratory use) and local infection prevention standards. The stainless steel material is non-corrosive, resistant to chemical disinfectants, and can be completely sanitized between procedures via spray disinfection and wipe-down. The electrical system meets medical device safety standards (IEC 60335-1 type), with emergency stop buttons and circuit breakers integrated into the Electrical Controls & Distribution panel. Staff working at autopsy tables are expected to use full personal protective equipment (surgical gown, mask, face shield, gloves, shoe covers), but the downdraft ventilation provides additional engineered control, reducing the aerosol exposure from volatile biohazard materials.
