Phlebotomy Chair Product

Overview

A phlebotomy chair (also called a blood-drawing chair or venipuncture chair) is a specialized medical seating device designed to provide patient comfort and stability during blood collection procedures. Unlike general examination chairs, phlebotomy chairs emphasize armrest positioning that brings the antecubital fossa (inner elbow) into optimal alignment with the phlebotomist's reach, while also offering a comfortable recline for patients prone to vasovagal syncope (fainting) during needle insertion.

The Chair Frame Assembly is a welded steel structure supporting a Seat Recline Mechanism with smooth, powered recline. Large Adjustable Armrest Assemblys with adjustable height and fore/aft positioning are positioned to support the patient's arm during blood draw, with blood-drawing-chair-seat-assembly and blood-drawing-chair-backrest-assembly upholstered in antimicrobial vinyl. A blood-drawing-chair-footrest-assembly and Caster & Mobility System complete the design.

Seat and recline mechanism

The Seat Recline Mechanism uses a Recline Linkage Assembly (multi-bar mechanical linkage) to tilt the entire seat-and-back assembly smoothly from upright (0°) to reclined (up to 70° or fully supine). A Recline Lock Handle lever allows the phlebotomist or nurse to set the recline angle and lock it in place against drift, maintaining the patient in a stable position during the procedure. A Torsion Spring (Assist) (optional on comfort-focused models) helps counterbalance the patient's weight, reducing the force needed to adjust the chair and preventing sudden drop.

The Suspension Spring Base isolates the seat pan from the frame via flexible springs, reducing shock and providing slight suspension comfort. The Seat Pan Shell is a molded form supporting the thighs and buttocks evenly, 60 cm wide and contoured to distribute pressure. Beneath the seat pan is a Cushion Foam Core (10 cm thick high-resilience polyurethane, 45 kg/m³ density), covered in a removable zippered Cushion Cover for easy sterilization.

Armrests

The Adjustable Armrest Assembly is perhaps the most critical functional element of a phlebotomy chair. Each armrest comprises a vertical Armrest Support Post (25 mm aluminum tube) that can be raised or lowered via an Adjustment Screw (Height) (M6 fine-pitch, ~2 mm per turn for precise height control), and articulated fore/aft via a Clamp / Lock Mechanism lever.

The Armrest Foam Pad is a 3–5 cm thick closed-cell foam pad, typically with a soft gel core for pressure relief, covered in antimicrobial vinyl. The pad is contoured to support the entire forearm from elbow to wrist, with a gentle roll at the distal end to cradle the hand. This positioning brings the antecubital fossa (the ideal venipuncture site) into a stable, accessible position for the phlebotomist, reducing procedure time and patient anxiety.

Height adjustment ranges ±10 cm; forward/back adjustment ±5 cm, so armrests can be positioned for patients of widely varying arm length and seated posture. On some models, the armrests are height-adjustable but fixed in fore/aft position; on others, both dimensions are continuously variable.

Upholstery and materials

All contact surfaces—seat, backrest, and armrests—are upholstered in Upholstery Fabric Panels (medical-grade bonded vinyl, 1.2 mm thickness, with antimicrobial treatment to prevent staph and streptococcal colonization). The fabric is fluid-resistant, easily wiped down with germicides, and machine-washable on removable panels. Common colors are light gray, soft blue, or sand to complement clinical environments.

The blood-drawing-chair-backrest-assembly reclines with the seat via the linkage mechanism. It supports the spine and provides pressure relief across the upper back. The backrest is padded (8 cm closed-cell foam) and is adjustable for angle on some models, allowing personalized lumbar support.

Frame and mobility

The Chair Frame Assembly consists of welded 30 × 30 × 2 mm steel tubing, powder-coated in epoxy paint (typically light gray, matching the upholstery). The frame is lightweight but rigid—welded gussets and bracing prevent racking. A 5-point star base on Caster & Mobility System (five 125 mm diameter casters, each rated 50 kg) provides stability; four casters swivel for maneuverability, one is fixed to prevent rolling in one direction. All casters have dual-lock brakes (locking both wheel and swivel), allowing the chair to be positioned precisely and preventing creep during the procedure.

The blood-drawing-chair-footrest-assembly is a molded plastic or welded steel platform, typically 40 × 30 cm, tilted at 8° to promote natural leg position. A Non-Slip Surface Pad of textured rubber or vinyl prevents foot slip. Some models offer adjustable footrest height.

Control and adjustability

The Adjustment & Control Interface are intuitive for clinical staff. The Control Lever (Recline / Tilt) (recline/tilt control) is a simple hand-operated lever on the side of the chair, easy to grasp and adjust while the patient is seated. The Adjustment Knob (Height) (armrest height) uses a knurled hand-turn mechanism for fine control. On some deluxe models, an electric motor with a foot pedal or hand switch allows hands-free recline and armrest adjustment, reducing caregiver strain during high-volume procedures.

An Instruction Label Plate affixed to the chair frame shows the adjustment range and usage instructions, useful for staff orientation and visitor reassurance.

Clinical workflow

A patient arriving for blood work is seated in the chair and asked to position their arm on the armrest. The phlebotomist adjusts the armrest height so the antecubital fossa is at the center of the working height (typically 40–50 cm above the floor), and positions the arm slightly pronated (palm-up, elbow slightly flexed) for optimal vein visibility. If the patient is anxious or has a history of syncope, the chair is reclined to 30–45°, reducing gravitational stress on the cardiovascular system and preventing fainting.

Once the needle is inserted and blood flows, the chair angle is locked to prevent drift. The procedure typically takes 1–5 minutes. Post-collection, the patient remains seated for 1–2 minutes, then the chair is raised back to upright over 10–15 seconds, allowing the patient's cardiovascular system to readjust before standing.

The chair is then disinfected: vinyl surfaces are sprayed with hospital-grade quaternary ammonium or alcohol-based germicide and wiped, typically taking <2 minutes, readying the chair for the next patient.
