Overview

A surgical stapler joins or divides tissue by driving rows of titanium staples and cutting between them in a single controlled action. It does in seconds what hand-suturing does in minutes, and it does it consistently: every staple is formed to the same closed-B shape, so the staple line seals evenly. Surgeons use it to transect bowel, close a lung resection, or build an anastomosis, where two staggered rows on each side of the cut leave a leak-resistant join with the knife track running clean down the middle.

The instrument is built around a multi-stroke Handle Assembly whose firing trigger advances the drive in steps. A long Articulating Shaft carries that motion to the jaws, where a disposable Staple Cartridge holds the unformed staples and a hardened Anvil forms them. A Knife Blade cuts between the staple rows, and the Drive Mechanism is the rack-and-gear train that powers the whole stroke. The cartridge is single-use; the handle is reloaded and reused.

How it works

Firing happens in two phases. First the Closure Trigger clamps the Anvil down onto the Staple Cartridge, compressing the tissue to a uniform thickness and locking the jaws. Then the surgeon squeezes the firing trigger in successive strokes. Each stroke turns the Helical Gear Pair in the Drive Mechanism, advancing the Drive Rack and pushing the Firing Rod down the shaft. An anti-backup pawl stops the drive from reversing mid-fire.

At the jaws, the rod pushes the Firing Wedge, a cammed sled that rides the cartridge and lifts each Staple Driver in turn. Each driver ejects a Titanium Staple upward, and the staple's legs strike the pocketed Anvil Face, which curls them into a closed B that grips the tissue. The Knife Blade follows just behind the wedge, slicing the tissue between the formed rows so the cut edges are stapled before they are ever separated. The Articulating Shaft can articulate up to 45° and rotate fully, letting the surgeon place a clean, hemostatic staple line deep in the body where a needle holder could never reach.
