Surgical Microscope Product

Overview

A surgical microscope gives a surgeon a magnified, brilliantly lit, stereoscopic view of tissue measured in fractions of a millimeter — the structures of the brain, the retina, or the middle ear. Unlike a lab microscope it works at a long distance so instruments fit in the gap, floats on a balanced arm that holds any position by itself, and lights the field coaxially so shadows do not fall into deep, narrow openings.

The optics live in the Optical Head, where the Objective Lens sets the working distance, the Zoom System changes magnification, and the Binocular Tube deliver a stereo image to each eye, with a Beam Splitter tapping the light off to the integrated camera. Light comes from the Illumination System source down a fiber guide into the objective path. The head is moved and focused by the Focus & Zoom Drive, held by the counterbalanced Suspension Arm, and carried on the Floor Stand, with the surgeon driving focus, zoom, and brakes from the Foot Switch.

How it works

Stereo vision is what lets the surgeon judge depth while operating. The Optical Head uses a single large Objective Lens shared by two parallel optical channels, so each eye sees the field from a slightly different angle and the brain fuses a three-dimensional image. The Zoom System is afocal — it changes magnification without shifting focus — so the surgeon can zoom in on a vessel without re-focusing, and the Beam Splitter sends a copy of that exact view to the Integrated Camera for assistants, recording, and screens.

Lighting and handling are the other half. The field sits at the bottom of a deep cavity, so the Illumination System pipes light through a fiber guide and injects it coaxially with the viewing axis, keeping the depths shadow-free, while running the hot source away from the patient. Positioning relies on balance: the Suspension Arm is a parallelogram counterweighted by Coil Springs so the heavy head feels weightless, and electromagnetic brakes in every joint lock the instant the surgeon lets go of the handgrips, then release at a fingertip. Fine focus and zoom are motorized in the Focus & Zoom Drive and commanded from the Foot Switch so the surgeon never takes a hand off the instruments.
