Infant Radiant Warmer Product
Overview
An infant radiant warmer is a neonatal care station that uses overhead infrared radiation to maintain body temperature in newborns during the critical first hours after birth and throughout their NICU stay. Premature infants and full-term babies with birth complications lose heat rapidly and cannot thermoregulate independently; a radiant warmer provides an open-top environment where physicians and nurses can access the infant freely for examination, resuscitation, umbilical line placement, and treatment while a feedback-controlled heater automatically adjusts power to match metabolic heat loss. The warmer sits at bedside and becomes the first point of care for many deliveries and transports.
The Radiant Heating Head hangs on an articulated arm above the Bassinet Platform Assembly, where the infant lies on a soft Mattress Platform Base. A Skin Temperature Thermistor taped to the infant's skin feeds back real-time temperature to the Servo Temperature Control Unit unit, which continuously modulates Ceramic Infrared Heater output to hold the baby at a preset temperature (typically 36.5–37.5 °C). An Examination LED Light overhead illuminates the work area, and the Tilt & Height Adjustment allows the platform to be tilted for procedures and raised or lowered for staff ergonomics.
How it works
The Ceramic Infrared Heater is a tubular electric heater that emits infrared radiation in the 3–15 micrometer range—largely absorbed by skin and not by ambient air. A Aluminum Reflector Dish focuses that radiation downward onto the infant. Because the infant is on an open platform (not in an enclosed incubator), clinicians can reach every part of the body without barriers, and air circulation around the baby is unrestricted. The open design is essential during resuscitation and emergency procedures.
The Servo Temperature Control Unit is a proportional integral–derivative (PID) controller that compares the sensed Skin Temperature Thermistor temperature against the caregiver's set target. If the infant's skin temperature falls below setpoint, the controller increases heater power output via pulse-width modulation of a Relay. If temperature rises too high (indicating overheating or room-temperature elevation), the controller reduces power or cycles the heater off. The feedback loop typically completes 2–5 times per second.
Safety is paramount: the Overtemperature Thermostat is a mechanical bimetallic switch that cuts all power if the Ceramic Infrared Heater temperature exceeds 42 °C, preventing accidental contact burns if a probe fails. The Probe Connection Sensor sensor verifies that the Skin Temperature Thermistor is seated in its connection port before the heater is allowed to operate—an unconnected probe would cause the servo to race power to maximum, attempting to reach an impossible target. Additional Pressure Sensor switches under the Mattress Platform Base detect whether an infant is actually present on the platform.
The Tilt & Height Adjustment uses a small Tilt Drive Motor and ball screw to angle the platform up to ±15 degrees—for draining fluids during umbilical catheterization or for positioning during phototherapy. A Vertical Lift Motor smoothly raises and lowers the entire bassinet assembly so staff can work at comfortable ergonomic height regardless of their own stature.
The Examination LED Light is an LED array offering adjustable intensity from 0 to 100%, color-corrected to 4000 K so clinicians can assess skin tone and cyanosis accurately. It mounts on an articulated gooseneck arm that can be repositioned without tools.
All electrical power flows through a main Power Supply transformer, with heater control via Relay contactors and overtemp Thermal Fuse cutoff. The unit stands on four Wheel Assembly casters with foot locks, so it can be rolled to the delivery room or between NICU stations while remaining stable during procedures.
