Phacoemulsification System Product
Overview
A phacoemulsification system is the console that performs modern cataract surgery. Through an incision a couple of millimeters wide, an ultrasonic needle breaks the clouded lens into fragments while the same handpiece irrigates the eye to keep it inflated and aspirates the emulsified debris away. The hard part is balance: the machine must remove material aggressively yet hold the anterior chamber stable, never letting it collapse, all under the surgeon's graded foot control.
The Phaco Handpiece does the cutting, vibrating its titanium needle ultrasonically. The Aspiration Pump generates the vacuum that pulls fragments out through a single-use Fluidics Cassette, while the Fluidics Monitoring system supplies balanced salt solution and watches pressure. The Control Console coordinates ultrasonic power and flow, the surgeon sets parameters on the Touchscreen Display and commands them in real time with the Foot Pedal, and the whole assembly rides on a Mobile Cart.
How it works
Emulsification is mechanical, not thermal. Stacked Piezoelectric Element crystals in the Phaco Handpiece expand and contract tens of thousands of times a second, and a resonant horn amplifies that motion into the Phaco Needle, whose hollow tip jackhammers the lens apart while its bore aspirates the pieces. An irrigation sleeve around the needle replaces every microliter removed, so the chamber stays at volume. A resonance-tracking driver keeps the stack at its exact mechanical frequency as load changes, and power modulation — pulsing or bursting the energy — limits heat at the incision.
The fluidics are the safety story. The Aspiration Pump sets aspiration flow and vacuum, and the Pressure Sensor feedback in the Fluidics Monitoring loop lets the controller detect when a fragment occludes the tip and then suddenly clears — a surge that could collapse the chamber — and ramp the pump down before that happens. Irrigation pressure is set by the height the Motorized Bottle Pole raises the BSS bottle, or by active pressurization. The surgeon meters all of it through the Foot Pedal, whose graded travel moves continuously from irrigation alone, to aspiration, to phaco power, so a single foot governs the entire balance of the procedure.
