Substation Surge Arrester Set

Assembly

A surge arrester set limits transient overvoltage at equipment in the substation bay. Its job is different from measuring voltage or interrupting a sustained fault. This BOM groups metal-oxide arresters with surge counters and support insulators, showing the protective devices alongside their monitoring and mounting components.

Inside the modeled arrester, zinc-oxide varistor blocks form the protective element. The housing provides the surrounding insulation and environmental enclosure. The counter belongs to the monitoring path; counting a discharge is not itself the protective action. Eaton's overvoltage-protection overview explains the role of metal-oxide varistors and the different sources of power-system overvoltage.

The important selection distinction is between normal continuous operating conditions and temporary or transient overvoltages. Eaton's station-class arrester catalog relates arrester choice to system voltage and grounding, and warns that an incorrect rating can lead to failure under abnormal conditions. A higher-looking voltage rating is not, by itself, proof of better protection.

The illustrated set does not establish insulation coordination, grounding details, discharge capability, or clearance requirements for an installation. Nor does the listed number of varistor blocks identify a purchasable arrester rating. Those decisions require the selected equipment's data and the power-system design. This page describes the component relationships, not a certified protection scheme.
