Automatic Transfer Switch

Product

Overview

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is the changeover device that keeps a critical load powered when the utility supply fails. It continuously watches the incoming mains, and when voltage or frequency falls outside acceptable limits it signals a standby generator to start, waits for that generator to reach stable output, then transfers the load from the dead utility to the live generator. When the utility returns and proves stable, it transfers back and lets the generator cool down before stopping it. This 400 A four-pole unit is the open-transition type, meaning it briefly breaks the load during a changeover rather than paralleling the two sources.

How it works

Both supplies land on copper bar inside the cabinet: the Utility Input carries the normal source and the Generator Input carries the emergency source, each terminated through compression Cable Lug connectors. A single Switching Mechanism holds the load on one source at a time. Its silver-alloy Main Contact Set are thrown by a small motor, built from a Stator Assembly and Rotor Assembly, acting through a cam linkage and an over-centre spring that snaps the contacts across with enough speed to limit arcing.

The decision to switch is made by the Transfer Controller, a microcontroller board that reads both supplies through the Source Sensing Relays. Those relays qualify each source against voltage and frequency windows, so a brown-out or a generator that has not yet reached speed is treated as unavailable. The controller runs the timing sequence, start delay, transfer delay, retransfer delay, and engine cooldown, and reports state on its LCD Panel.

Because connecting both sources together would be catastrophic, an Mechanical Interlock mechanically blocks the mechanism from ever bridging utility and generator. The Control Wiring ties the controller to the mechanism, sensing relays, and the generator start contacts, all housed in the Enclosure.
