Synchronous Condenser
ProductOverview
A synchronous condenser is a synchronous machine operated in motor mode without connected mechanical load, functioning as a dynamic reactive power source for AC power systems. Unlike static capacitors, the synchronous condenser provides voltage support proportional to terminal voltage, making it essential for grid stability in regions with weak or long transmission feeders. The device improves power factor, reduces voltage dips during faults, and provides natural damping of oscillations through electromagnetic coupling.
Synchronous condensers have been employed in bulk power transmission since the 1920s and remain the preferred solution where transient stability and fast reactive power response are critical. Modern designs integrate brushless excitation, solid-state protection, and advanced regulator algorithms to enable seamless integration with renewable energy sources and HVDC converter stations.
How it works
The Rotor Assembly rotates at synchronous speed (proportional to grid frequency) when connected to the power system. The Stator Assembly generates three-phase armature windings coupled to the network. A rotating Excitation System maintains the Rotor Assembly field voltage, adjustable via the Voltage Regulator to control reactive power output.
When excited at normal field voltage, the machine draws leading (capacitive) current, injecting reactive power into the grid and raising local voltage. By reducing field excitation below the critical level, the machine absorbs reactive power (inductive mode) for voltage damping. The Starting System accelerates the rotor from standstill using induction-motor action until the Synchronism Relay detects synchronism and engages excitation.
The Damper Winding in rotor poles provides natural damping of subsynchronous oscillations and contributes to starting torque. Cooling System systems remove rotor copper loss and stator iron loss, maintaining insulation temperature within Class F or H limits. Radial and thrust Bearing and Sealing support the rotor while minimizing friction and magnetic bearing loss.
The Control & Protection Panel houses the automatic voltage regulator, synchronizing relay, protective relays for overfrequency, underfrequency, and underexcitation, and the HMI for local control and monitoring. Network-connected controllers can modulate reactive power output in milliseconds, responding to voltage transients or grid operator commands.
Applications
Synchronous condensers are deployed at HVAC–HVDC converter terminals, in series-capacitor-compensated long-distance lines, and at substations with large solar or wind farms requiring reactive support. A single 100–200 MVA unit can stabilize a 500 MVA solar plant during cloud transients, replacing dozens of static capacitor banks.
Comparison with static capacitors
Static capacitor banks provide constant reactive power proportional to V², dropping rapidly during voltage sags. Synchronous condensers maintain reactive power supply down to 0.5 per unit voltage, riding through faults that would collapse traditional compensation. This voltage-dependent performance is unmatched by solid-state devices, making them irreplaceable in weak-grid environments.
Maintenance
The Bearing Oil requires annual sampling for moisture, acid number, and particulates. The Cooling System system ducts must be inspected for debris blockage quarterly. Exciter diodes and regulator potentiometers typically require service every 5–10 years. Complete rotor–stator winding resistance testing (megger tests) is performed every 2–3 years during scheduled outages.
