Freeze Dryer Product

Overview

A freeze dryer removes water from a frozen sample by sublimation: at low enough pressure, ice turns straight to vapor without melting, so the material dries while staying frozen and structurally intact. That matters for things that liquid evaporation would ruin — vaccines, proteins, bacterial cultures, food, and reagents that must redissolve to their original state. The freeze-dried cake is light, shelf-stable, and reconstitutes by just adding water.

The cycle has three phases the instrument is built to run: freezing the product solid, primary drying that sublimes the bulk ice under vacuum, and secondary drying that pulls off the last bound moisture at slightly raised temperature. Holding deep vacuum while a refrigerated trap captures every gram of escaping water is the whole engineering problem.

How it works

Samples are frozen and placed on the Drying Chamber shelves, then the chamber is sealed and the Vacuum Pump pulls it down to a fraction of a millibar. At that pressure the ice in the product begins to sublime. Sublimation is endothermic, so the Heated Shelf heaters supply a trickle of warmth to keep it going without letting the product melt — the controller balances shelf heat against vacuum to walk the product along the edge of its collapse temperature.

The water vapor leaving the samples has to go somewhere other than the pump, where it would emulsify the oil and wreck the vacuum. It is caught by the Refrigeration System system: a hermetic compressor chills the Cold-Trap Coil inside the Cold-Trap Vessel to around −55 °C, so vapor refreezes there as frost. The trap is always kept colder than the product, which is what makes the vapor flow toward it.

A Sensor Set gives the controller its eyes — a Pirani gauge for system pressure and RTD probes in sample vials for product temperature — while the Valve Block isolates the chamber and admits filtered air to break vacuum at the end. The whole sequence, including the changeover from primary to secondary drying, is programmed and logged through the Control Board and run from the Touchscreen Panel.
