Articulated Dump Truck Product

Overview

An articulated dump truck is a large, six-wheel hauler used on construction and mining sites where roads are rough, muddy, or non-existent. The truck is split into two units joined by a ball-and-socket pivot: the Tractor Unit unit carrying the engine, cab, and front axle, and the Dump Body Unit unit with the cargo box and rear axle. This articulation is the defining feature — as the truck climbs a hillside, the body pivots on the ball joint, following ground contours and resisting tipping on side slopes far better than a rigid body could.

The payload is 20–30 tonnes of excavated rock, soil, or processed aggregate. The truck travels at walking pace on rough terrain, dumping its load by lifting the body hydraulically, and is preferred where wheel-slip and ground damage must be minimized.

How it works

The Diesel Engine, a six-cylinder turbodiesel rated 200–350 kW, is mounted longitudinally in the Tractor Unit, driving a Transmission, typically an automatic box with torque converter. The transmission output shaft drives the rear axles through a driveshaft. The Tractor Rear Axle, a tandem differential with dual wheels on each side (6x6), receives power and splits it left and right equally. The Tractor Front Axle, the steering axle, carries single wheels and is connected to the front frame through the Steering Cylinder, a hydraulic cylinder controlled by the driver's Steering Wheel.

All four axles — front and rear on the tractor, and the tandem on the body — are suspended on Leaf Spring Pack packs, stiff multi-leaf springs that support heavy loads and allow limited articulation. Each axle has Shock Absorber hydraulic dampers to absorb impacts and control bounce.

The Articulation Joint joint is the heart of the design. A hardened steel Pivot Ball is bolted firmly to the tractor frame, and a matching steel Pivot Cup socket is welded to the Body Frame. The body sits on the ball and can pivot up to ±25 degrees in any direction — left-right for steering and slope traverse, and fore-aft for climbing obstacles. This ball joint carries the full payload and must be lubricated constantly; a grease fitting at the joint allows the operator or mechanic to pump in grease between cycles, and a wear ring absorbs the side-load shear.

The Coupling Ring at the articulation carries the hydraulic and brake lines across the joint without kinking. The Brake System is a dual-circuit air or hydraulic system integrated across the joint — brake lines run through the coupling ring, and both units apply brakes equally, with load-sensing proportioning so loaded trucks brakes harder than empty ones.

The Dump Body Unit is a large steel box welded to the Body Frame. Two Hydraulic Lift Cylinder, double-acting hydraulic cylinders mounted between the frame and the body, tilt the entire body backward, dumping the cargo. The operator engages the raise function in the cab, and hydraulic pressure (from the main engine-driven pump) flows into the cylinders, pushing the body up. The material slides out the back, tumbling down, and gravity brings the body back down when the operator releases.

The Operator Cabin sits atop the Tractor Unit, providing protected space for the driver and controls. The Steering Pump supplies low-pressure oil to the Steering Cylinder, allowing the driver to steer with modest effort despite the truck's weight and off-road traction.

Articulation dampers (in the Steering & Articulation Control assembly) smooth out the pivoting action on rough terrain, preventing excessive rocking and reducing driver fatigue. The flexibility of the articulation joint means the truck can climb a hillside with the body perpendicular to the tractor without stressing the frame or pivot — this capability is critical in rough terrain where a rigid truck would struggle to climb the slope or tip.
