Excavator Boom

Product

Also known as: excavator boom, excavator arm, boom and stick

Overview

The Excavator Boom is the articulated front work equipment of a hydraulic excavator. It mounts to the revolving upper structure at the boom foot and carries the bucket at the arm tip. Three cylinder groups give it three degrees of freedom: the boom raises and lowers, the arm crowds in and out, and the bucket curls through a power linkage. This entry covers the assembly for a 20-30 t crawler machine, supplied as a rebuildable unit so a worn or cracked front end can be replaced without disturbing the house and undercarriage.

The structural spine is two welded box weldments. The Boom weldment is curved so that the bucket can be drawn close to the tracks for trenching, while the Arm weldment is straight and slimmer to reach into the cut. Both are fabricated from high-tensile quenched and tempered plate (S690QL grade, with S960 used at the most loaded lugs) and stress-relieved after welding.

Boom and arm structure

The Boom weldment is built around an Boom box section formed from an Boom top plate, an Boom bottom plate, and two Boom side plate webs, closed with internal Boom gusset stiffeners at the pin bosses. The chassis end carries two Boom foot lug castings bored for the foot pins. Partway along the lower chord sit two Boom cylinder mount lugs for the boom cylinder rod ends, and a single Arm cylinder mount on the upper chord anchors the arm cylinder base. The tip carries two Boom tip boss bores for the boom-to-arm joint. Two Boom lifting eye pads let the weldment be slung during assembly and removal.

The Arm weldment follows the same construction: an Arm box section with two Arm side plate webs and four Arm gusset stiffeners. Its Arm boom boss bores pin it to the boom, the Bucket cylinder mount anchors the bucket cylinder base, the Arm cylinder rod lug takes the arm cylinder rod, and the Arm bucket boss bores carry the bucket pin at the tip.

Hydraulic cylinders

All four cylinders are double-acting and share a common rebuild scheme. Each has an Boom cylinder tube (or the arm and bucket equivalents) that is honed to a fine finish, a hard-chrome Boom cylinder rod, a screwed-on Boom cylinder piston, and a threaded Boom cylinder gland at the rod end. The two Boom cylinder units lift the boom and run at 140 mm bore with a 1.40 m stroke; together they carry the full digging reaction at the foot. The single Arm cylinder is the largest at 150 mm bore, and the Bucket cylinder is the smallest at 130 mm bore.

Sealing is handled by a Boom cylinder seal kit (or the matching arm and bucket kits). Each kit holds an Piston seal, two Cylinder wear ring bands that center the piston, and static O-Ring Set elements. At the gland, an Cylinder rod wiper keeps grit off the rod, an Cylinder rod bearing band carries side load, and an Oil Seal retains oil under pressure. Service Cylinder port block fittings land the supply and return lines. Cylinders mount on Boom cylinder pin pins running in Boom cylinder bushing sleeves at each eye.

Linkage and pins

The bucket is driven through the Bucket linkage, a four-bar set that multiplies cylinder force into curl torque as the bucket rolls back. It uses one H-link idler and two I-link side links, joined by four Linkage pin pins in six Linkage bushing sleeves, with Linkage thrust washer shims setting the side clearance.

The three main joints share the Pivot pin set. Two Boom foot pin pins hold the boom to the house, one Boom-arm pin joins boom and arm, and one Arm-bucket pin carries the bucket. Each pin runs in an Pivot bushing sleeve, is located by Pivot thrust shim shims and an Pin retainer plate, and is closed against dirt by an Joint dust seal.

Service

Pressure oil reaches the cylinders through the Hydraulic plumbing: steel Hard line runs along the booms, flexible Hydraulic hose sections cross each joint, and cushioned Hose clamp clamps hold the routing clear of pinch points. An Line pressure sensor tap (built on a shared Pressure Sensor element) reads boom pressure for load and diagnostic readout. The Grease system feeds every pin through Grease line lines and accessible Grease fitting nipples, banked at an Grease bank block so the operator can lubricate from one point.

Routine service is grease-pin maintenance and seal renewal. Pin bores and bushings are the first wear item; checking pin-to-bushing play and replacing the Pivot bushing sleeves on schedule keeps the joints tight and avoids ovalizing the weldment bores. Cylinder reseals using the relevant kit are the next most common job. A Wear pad set of bolt-on Rod stop pad and Hose guide pad pads protects the high-contact surfaces and is replaced as it thins.
