Overview

A vibratory plate compactor is a walk-behind machine that packs down soil, gravel, paving sand, and fresh asphalt by hammering the ground with a rapidly vibrating steel plate. It is the workhorse for trench backfill, paver bedding, driveways, and patch repairs where a full ride-on roller will not fit. An operator walks behind it and steers with a guide handle while the machine creeps forward under its own vibration.

Power comes from a Gasoline Engine, a single-cylinder air-cooled gasoline unit with its own Fuel Tank and pull-start Recoil Starter. The engine sits on a deck that is decoupled from the vibrating plate by four Vibration Isolation Mount assemblies, so the operator and engine are spared the worst of the shaking. The whole machine rides on a single Base Plate and is guided by the Operator Handle.

How it works

Engine power reaches the vibration unit through a Centrifugal Clutch & Belt. At idle the centrifugal clutch is disengaged, so the plate sits still and the engine can run safely; as the operator opens the Throttle Control, the clutch shoes fly outward, grip the drum, and spin the V-belt that drives the plate.

The belt turns the Exciter Unit, an oil-bath housing carrying a heavy Eccentric Shaft. Spinning the offset weight thousands of times a minute throws a large rotating centrifugal force that the housing transmits straight into the base plate. Because the eccentric is mounted ahead of the plate's center, each cycle also nudges the machine forward, so it self-propels along the surface while it compacts. The force drives air and water out of the material and locks the grains together into a dense, load-bearing layer.

For asphalt work a Water Spray Kit gravity-feeds water onto the plate through a sprinkler bar, keeping hot bitumen from sticking and tearing the surface. To move the machine between jobs, a central Transport Kit provides a balanced lifting eye and fold-down wheels.
