Self-Loading Concrete Mixer

Product

Overview

A self-loading concrete mixer is a self-propelled machine that performs the whole concrete supply chain in one unit: it scoops raw aggregate from a stockpile, weighs each ingredient, adds metered water and cement, mixes the batch while driving to the pour, and discharges the finished concrete on site. The same machine that a small contractor would otherwise split across a wheel loader, a batching plant and a truck mixer is collapsed into a single articulated chassis that one operator runs from one cabin. Typical models mix between 2.5 and 5.5 m3 of concrete per batch and run on a Diesel Engine rated at 55 to 75 kW.

The machine is built around an articulated frame. A Front Frame and a Rear Frame are joined at a central Articulation Joint, and the two halves are bent relative to each other by hydraulic steering cylinders. This layout gives a tight turning circle in the confined space of a building site and keeps the wheelbase short. All four wheels are driven through a Front Drive Axle and an oscillating Rear Drive Axle, so the unit climbs muddy ramps and rough ground that a road-going truck mixer could not reach.

Powertrain and Drive

Propulsion comes from a closed-loop hydrostatic transmission rather than a mechanical gearbox. The diesel engine drives a variable-displacement Hydrostatic Drive Pump, which sends oil to a bent-axis Hydrostatic Drive Motor at each axle. Because flow is varied steplessly, the operator gets smooth control from a crawl up to a road speed near 25 km/h, with the same lever giving forward and reverse. Final drive happens through a Differential and planetary hub reductions in each axle, and braking uses oil-immersed Wet Disc Brake discs that stay sealed against site dust and water.

The engine also drives a tandem Hydraulic Gear Pump that feeds the work hydraulics. This open circuit runs the loading shovel, the drum, the swivel and the discharge chute through a stacked Valve Bank at pressures up to 250 bar. Keeping travel on a closed circuit and the work functions on a separate open circuit means the operator can drive and mix at the same time without the two robbing each other of flow.

Loading and Weighing

At the front of the machine a Loading Shovel carries a Loading Bucket of 250 to 400 L on a lifting arm. The operator drives the bucket into a pile of sand or gravel, curls it, lifts the arm with the Lift Cylinder pair, and tips the load into the weigh hopper. The bucket has a bolt-on Cutting Edge of hardened steel so it can scrape compacted material and be re-edged when worn.

Accurate concrete depends on dosing each ingredient by mass, so the Weigh Hopper hangs on three shear-beam Load Cell units that read the load to within about 0.5 percent. The display in the cabin tells the operator when the target mass of aggregate or cement has been reached, then the hopper tips its contents down the charge chute into the drum. Water is added separately through a turbine Flow Meter drawing from the Water Tank, which lets the operator hit a chosen water-cement ratio and keep the mix consistent from batch to batch.

Mixing and Discharge

The heart of the machine is the Mixing Drum, a rolled steel Mixer Drum with helical internal Mixing Blade vanes. A hydraulic motor turns the drum through a planetary Drum Gearbox while the unit travels, so the concrete is fully mixed by the time it reaches the pour. Reversing the drum direction makes the same blades push the concrete out instead of folding it in. A replaceable Drum Wear Liner takes the abrasion so the shell itself lasts.

What sets the self-loader apart from a fixed truck mixer is the Drum Swivel Mount. A large slewing ring lets the operator rotate the whole drum up to about 270 degrees and pour to either side or to the rear without repositioning the machine. A folding Discharge Chute then places the concrete into a trench, a form or a barrow. A wash-down Wash-Down Spray Bar cleans the drum and chute at the end of the run.

Materials

The frames, axle housings and drum take the heaviest loads and are made from welded steel plate and nodular cast iron. Wear surfaces, the bucket cutting edge, the mixing blades and the drum liner, use abrasion-resistant steel because wet aggregate is severely erosive. Hydraulic cylinder rods are chrome-plated to resist scoring, and the water tank and fuel tank are moulded polyethylene to avoid corrosion. Rotating joints run on sealed Ball Bearing sets protected by Oil Seal elements, and the cylinders are rebuilt with an O-Ring Set seal kit.

Variants and Applications

Models are graded by drum output, commonly 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 m3, with larger units carrying bigger engines and water tanks. Cabin options range from an open ROPS/FOPS Canopy to a fully enclosed climate cabin, and many machines add an automated batching Machine Controller that stores recipes and logs each load. Self-loading mixers suit sites far from a ready-mix plant: rural roads and bridges, scattered foundations, dams, mining and remote infrastructure where calling out a truck mixer is slow or uneconomic. Because one operator handles loading, batching, mixing and pouring, the machine fits small crews that need fresh concrete in modest quantities on demand.
