Long-Reach Excavator

Overview

A long-reach excavator is a tracked hydraulic excavator fitted with an extended front end that trades digging force for distance. Where a standard excavator of the same class reaches 9 to 11 m, the long-reach version reaches 15 to 30 m by using a longer multi-piece boom and a slim dipper arm. The machine is used for dredging canals and ponds, slope shaping, river bank cleanup, and reaching across obstacles such as embankments, water, or rubble piles that keep a standard machine from getting close to the work. A separate high-reach demolition variant of the same base machine carries the boom upright to break down tall structures.

The machine is built on the same diesel and undercarriage layout as a conventional excavator, with the differences concentrated in the Long-Reach Front End and the Counterweight Group. Power comes from a diesel Diesel Engine driving the Hydraulic System, which feeds the boom, arm, bucket, swing, and travel circuits. The whole upper machine turns on the Upperstructure and Swing above a tracked Undercarriage.

How the reach is achieved

The front end is the defining subsystem. Instead of one boom and one stick, it uses a Base Boom Section pinned to the frame, an Intermediate Boom Section section that adds length, and a long Long Dipper Arm at the end. Each boom section is a tapered box-section Boom Weldment made from high-strength steel such as S690QL, which keeps the structure light enough to swing without losing stiffness over the long span. The sections are joined at greased pivots running in a Boom Pivot Bushing at each eye, fed by a Centralized Grease Line so the operator does not have to grease the upper pins by hand.

The front end is moved by three hydraulic circuits. A pair of Boom Cylinder units raise and lower the boom, an Arm Cylinder crowds the arm, and a Bucket Cylinder curls the Dredging Bucket through the Bucket Linkage. The bucket is small and light, typically 0.3 to 1.0 cubic meters, because at full reach the machine can lift far less than it could with a short stick. A heavy standard bucket would overload the structure and risk tipping the machine.

Stability and load moment

Reaching out 25 m puts the load a long way from the slewing center, which multiplies the overturning moment. Two things hold the machine down. First, the Counterweight Casting is enlarged compared with the standard machine, often by several tonnes, and bolted to the rear of the revolving frame through the Counterweight Bracket. Second, the Undercarriage is frequently widened, using a longer track gauge and wide Track Shoe (Grouser) grousers to spread ground pressure and widen the tipping base.

A Load Moment Limiter watches the working envelope in real time. It reads boom and arm angle from the Boom Angle Sensor units and cylinder pressure from the hydraulic sensors, computes the load moment, and warns the operator before the machine approaches the tipping line. A separate Overload Warning Device device at the front end gives a direct audible and visual alarm, and a Load-Holding Valve on the boom and arm cylinders prevents the front end from dropping if a hose bursts.

Drive and rotation

The Upperstructure and Swing turns on a Slewing Ring Bearing, a large internal-gear turntable bearing. The Swing Drive uses a Swing Motor and a Swing Planetary Set reduction to turn the Swing Pinion against the slew ring teeth. Swing speed is kept modest, around 6 to 9 rpm, because the long boom carries a lot of inertia and fast starts and stops would shake the structure and the operator.

Each track is driven by a Travel Drive combining a two-speed Travel Motor with a planetary Travel Final Drive at the Drive Sprocket. Oil crosses the rotating joint between upper and lower machine through the Center Swivel Joint, so the travel circuit keeps working no matter where the upperstructure is pointed.

Hydraulics and engine

The Hydraulic System runs two Main Hydraulic Pump units, variable-displacement axial piston pumps that supply only the flow the work demands. The Main Control Valve bank routes flow to each actuator under pilot command from a Pilot Pump. System pressure runs around 320 to 350 bar to recover some of the force lost to the long lever arm.

The diesel Diesel Engine is a turbocharged six-cylinder unit with common-rail Fuel Injection System and an Aftertreatment Module module carrying a Diesel Particulate Filter and an SCR Catalyst to meet Stage V and Tier 4 Final limits. The operator works from a Operator Cab with a reinforced front guard and a Display Panel that shows the load moment readout alongside engine and hydraulic status.

Variants and use

Dredging machines carry a perforated bucket that lets water drain as material is lifted, and they often work from a barge or a prepared bank. Demolition machines of the same family swap the dredging bucket for a hydraulic shear or pulverizer and use a three-piece boom that folds to bring the tool up high. Both rely on the same load moment discipline: smaller tools, larger counterweight, wider track, and constant attention to the working radius. Day-to-day care follows engine hours and covers pin greasing, cylinder seal condition, track tension, and inspection of the boom weldments for fatigue cracks at the high-stress pivot areas.
