Wheeled Excavator

Overview

A wheeled excavator is a hydraulic excavator built on a rubber-tired travel base instead of steel tracks. It digs, loads, lifts, and handles material with the same boom, arm, and bucket as a crawler excavator, but it drives between jobs on its own wheels at road speed and works without tearing up paved or finished surfaces. That combination suits it to urban work, road and utility maintenance, landscaping, and any site where the machine must reposition often across town or along a corridor. The size range covered here sits between 14 and 22 tonnes, the most common class for two-axle road-mobile machines.

The machine has two main parts joined by a slew bearing. The Upperstructure is the rotating platform that carries the Diesel Engine, the Operator Cab, the hydraulic pumps, the Counterweight, and the Front End. The Wheeled Undercarriage is the wheeled chassis below it. Oil crosses between the two through a Center Swivel Joint so the upper body can rotate continuously without twisting the travel and brake lines.

Engine and emissions

The power unit is a turbocharged diesel, usually a four-cylinder in this weight class. Air passes through a two-stage Air Cleaner before the Turbocharger and Charge Air Cooler pack more air mass into the cylinders. Fuel is metered by a common-rail Fuel Injection System system running near 2000 bar for fine timing control. To meet Stage V and Tier 4 Final limits, the Aftertreatment Module module first traps soot in a Diesel Particulate Filter and then converts nitrogen oxides over an SCR Catalyst using urea from the DEF Dosing Injector. The Cooling Package uses a hydraulically driven, reversible fan that can blow debris back out of the radiator core, which matters on a machine that works in its own dust.

Hydraulics

The engine drives a tandem Main Hydraulic Pump, a load-sensing variable-displacement axial piston pump that supplies only the flow the operator demands. A small Pilot Pump feeds the pilot circuit that positions the spools. The Main Control Valve bank routes flow to the boom, arm, bucket, swing, travel, and stabilizer functions, and its Relief Valve cartridges cap pressure at around 320 to 350 bar. Return oil is filtered and cooled in the Hydraulic Tank and Hydraulic Oil Cooler. Because the same pump feeds both digging and driving, the Center Swivel Joint ports travel and brake pressure down to the chassis while the upper body swings.

Upperstructure and swing

The Upperstructure turns on a Slew Ring Bearing, a large single-row ball bearing whose inner race carries internal gear teeth. The Swing Drive meshes a Swing Pinion into those teeth through a Swing Motor and planetary reduction, giving a swing speed of roughly 9 to 11 rpm. A spring-applied Swing Parking Brake holds the upper body still while the machine travels or works on a grade. The Counterweight at the rear offsets the load hanging out on the front end.

Wheeled undercarriage

This is where a wheeled excavator differs most from a tracked one. The Carrier Frame carries two axles. The Front Axle (Steer/Oscillating) is steered and sits on a center Axle Oscillation Bearing so it can rock to follow uneven ground while keeping all four tires loaded; the Rear Axle (Rigid Drive) is rigidly mounted and driven. Both axles use a hypoid Axle Differential and an outboard Planetary Wheel Hub at each wheel to multiply torque close to the Pneumatic Tire. A hydraulic Travel Motor feeds a two-speed Travel Gearbox that selects a low work range and a high road range, with Drive Shaft propeller shafts carrying torque to the axles. The machine reaches up to 35 km/h on the road, so it needs real brakes: wet multi-disc Service Brake units at the wheels and a driveline Parking Brake. Steering is hydrostatic, with a Steering Control Unit (Orbitrol) orbitrol metering oil to the Steering Cylinder through a Steering Priority Valve that reserves flow for steering ahead of the implements.

Tires let the machine move quickly but give it a narrower, higher footing than tracks, so it must lock itself down to dig hard. A pair of Stabilizer Outrigger legs and a Stabilizer Dozer Blade press against the ground to stiffen the chassis, stop it rocking on the tires, and add reach stability. The blade also doubles for backfilling and light grading.

Front end and digging

The working linkage is the Front End. A box-section Boom is raised by two Boom Cylinder units, the Dipper Arm is crowded by the Arm Cylinder, and the Bucket is curled by the Bucket Cylinder through a Bucket Linkage that multiplies breakout force. The bucket shell is abrasion-resistant plate fitted with replaceable Bucket Tooth points. All joints ride on hardened Pivot Pin parts that are greased on a schedule. Booms are often built in mono or two-piece form, and many machines run a quick coupler so the bucket can be swapped for a hydraulic breaker, grapple, or tilt rotator.

Operation and maintenance

The operator works from a Operator Cab with two Control Joystick controls for dig and swing and pedals for travel and braking. Daily checks cover engine oil, coolant, hydraulic level, tire pressure and condition, brake function, and the bucket teeth. Compared with a tracked machine, the wheeled excavator trades flotation and pure tractive pull for the ability to drive itself between jobs without a trailer, which is why it dominates municipal and roadside fleets while crawler excavators stay on soft, steep, or heavy bulk-earthmoving ground.
