Rough Terrain Crane Product

Overview

A rough terrain crane is a mobile lifting machine built to work on unprepared ground — construction sites, yards, and uneven lots where a road-going truck crane cannot operate. It rides on four very large flotation tires, drives and steers on all four wheels, and carries a telescoping boom on a slewing superstructure. A single engine both drives the machine between lift points and powers the crane functions, so it is compact and self-sufficient: it drives to the load, sets its outriggers, and lifts.

The two halves that matter are the off-road Running Gear that gets it across rough sites and the Telescoping Boom and Hoist Winch & Hook Block that do the lifting, with a load-moment limiter watching stability throughout.

How it works

Power comes from a turbocharged Diesel Engine that feeds the Running Gear travel transmission for driving and the Hydraulic System pumps for crane work. The four-wheel-drive axles with a differential give traction on mud and slopes, and four-wheel steering lets the crane crab sideways or turn within its own length to position precisely.

Before lifting, the operator deploys the Outrigger System: four legs extend horizontally and jack down, lifting the tires clear and levelling the crane on a wide, stable footprint. The Telescoping Boom then telescopes out and luffs up under hydraulic power, while the Hoist Winch & Hook Block winch reeves wire rope over the boom-head sheaves down to the hook block. The Slew Ring & Swing Drive ring and swing drive rotate the whole superstructure so the load can be placed anywhere in a full circle, balanced by the rear counterweight.

Every lift is governed by the Operator Cab load-moment limiter, which reads boom angle, extended length, and the pressure in the luffing cylinder to compute the actual load and its overturning moment. As the geometry approaches the rated chart it warns the operator and then locks out further motion, preventing the most common cause of mobile-crane accidents — tipping. The operator controls boom, hoist, slew, and outriggers from consoles in a tilting cab with a clear view up the boom.
