Drilling Rig Truck

Overview

A drilling rig truck is a self-contained boring machine mounted on a heavy road-going chassis. It is built to drive to a site, level itself, raise a mast, and bore holes for water wells, geotechnical investigation, and shallow mineral exploration. Carrying the Carrier Truck Chassis, the Drill Mast and Feed, and all fluid and power systems on one vehicle lets a two-person crew move between sites in a day and begin drilling within an hour of arrival.

The machine supports two main drilling methods. Mud rotary drilling pumps drilling fluid down the hollow drill string to flush cuttings up the annulus, and is used in soft and unconsolidated ground. Down-the-hole (DTH) air hammer drilling uses compressed air to drive a percussive hammer and lift cuttings, and is used in hard rock. The Drilling Fluid Circulation system carries both a mud pump and an air compressor so the rig can switch method to suit the formation.

Carrier and Propulsion

The base is a tandem-axle 6x6 truck with a welded Ladder Chassis Frame reinforced to carry the rig deck loads. Road propulsion comes from an 11 litre Diesel Propulsion Engine, an inline-six turbo-diesel kept as a conventional road unit so that maintenance follows standard truck practice. Drive passes through a nine-speed Gearbox with PTO whose side and rear power take-off ports are the key feature for the rig: they tap engine power for the hydraulics without a separate deck engine. The Front Steer/Drive Axle steers and drives, while the two Drive Axle units carry most of the weight. The Crew Cab seats the crew for transit, and two Diesel Fuel Tank units give a working range between fuel stops.

Hydraulic Power

Every drilling function runs on hydraulics rather than direct mechanical drive. The Hydraulic Power Pack pack is engaged through the PTO Drive Shaft from the gearbox PTO, turning two variable-displacement Main Hydraulic Pump units. Oil is metered by a proportional Proportional Valve Bank to the mast feed, rotary head, winches, and outriggers. A 300 litre Hydraulic Reservoir reservoir feeds the pumps, and an Oil Cooler and Filter holds oil temperature down during continuous drilling. The pumps and motors throughout use Ball Bearing supports and O-Ring Set seal kits, with Oil Seal elements on rotating shafts to keep the circuit clean.

Mast and Feed

The Drill Mast and Feed is a three-section telescoping box structure raised from its transport position by the Mast Raise Cylinder, which pivots the mast on the greased Mast Pivot Pins pins. Each Mast Section is fabricated from Sheet Metal Panel plate welded into a torsionally stiff box. At the top, the Crown Block carries the hoist and sandline cables over its sheaves. Vertical force on the bit comes from the Chain Pulldown Feed, a dual-chain pulldown driven by a Feed Hydraulic Motor through a Helical Gear Pair reduction, with Feed Roller Chain loops running over hardened Feed Sprocket wheels. The chain feed gives both the crowd force needed to advance the bit and rapid retract when adding rod.

Rotary Head and String

Rotation is supplied by the Top-Drive Rotary Head, a top drive that travels up and down the mast on the feed chains. Two Rotation Motor units feed the Rotary Reduction Gearbox, whose Gearbox Housing holds the reduction gears that turn the hollow Drive Spindle. Drill rod is gripped by the spring-applied Hydraulic Chuck, which uses Coil Spring packs to clamp and hydraulic pressure to release. Drilling fluid enters the string through the Top Water Swivel at the top, sealed by Oil Seal rotary elements. Adding and removing rod is handled by the Rod Handling and Breakout system: the Rod Carousel presents pipe, the Breakout Wrench breaks the threaded joints, and the Floor Pipe Clamp holds the string at floor level.

Hoisting and Stabilizing

The Hoist and Sandline Winches handle vertical loads. The planetary Main Drawworks Winch lifts the string on its grooved Winch Drum and is held by a failsafe Winch Disc Brake that releases on hydraulic pressure. A separate Sandline Winch runs bailers and casing tools on a lighter line. Before drilling, the Outrigger Leveling Jacks outriggers extend their Jack Cylinder rams onto Jack Ground Pad feet, lifting the rig off its suspension; the Inclination Sensor units guide the operator to a level deck.

Controls and Electrical

The operator works from the Operator Control Station station. The Control Console groups the directional levers and pressure gauges, while the Parameter Display built around an LCD Panel shows depth, rotation speed, pulldown, and circuit pressures. Logic runs on the Rig Controller board, which carries an Microcontroller and Relay outputs on a Bare PCB substrate. Power for the rig comes from the Electrical System system: an Alternator built from a Stator Assembly and Rotor Assembly charges the battery bank, a Power Supply distributes 24 V, and a Wire Bundle harness with Connector junctions ties the whole machine together.

Variants and Use

Smaller versions on a 4x2 chassis bore domestic water wells to about 150 m, while the heaviest 6x6 units reach 300 m for irrigation and municipal supply. Geotechnical variants drop the air compressor and add core barrel tooling for soil sampling. The combination of road mobility, onboard fluid, and quick mast setup makes the truck rig the standard tool for rural and agricultural water supply where a site may be reached only by unpaved track.
