Padfoot Soil Compactor

Product

Overview

A padfoot soil compactor is a self-propelled roller whose single front drum is covered in raised tapered lugs. Where a smooth drum presses soil flat from the top, the Padfoot Drum drives its pads down into the layer and kneads it from within, which is what cohesive soils need. Clay and silt hold together through cohesion rather than friction, so simply pressing the surface traps a soft, weak zone underneath. The pads punch through that surface, work the moisture and air out of the lift, and compact from the bottom up as the machine makes repeated passes. As the lift firms, the pads "walk out" of the soil and ride higher, which tells the operator the layer is near full density.

The machine is built on an Articulated Frame that articulates in the middle for steering. The Diesel Engine Package turns the Hydraulic System, which power both the Drive and Steer System and the vibrating drum. The operator works from the Operator Cab, and the Electrical System system ties the controls and measurement together.

The padfoot drum

The Padfoot Drum is the working tool. Its Drum Shell is a thick rolled-steel cylinder onto which more than a hundred Padfoot Lug lugs are welded in a staggered pattern. The taper on each pad lets it enter and leave the soil cleanly without dragging the lift apart. Inside the shell, two Eccentric Shaft shafts spin on Ball Bearing sets, driven by a Vibration Motor. The offset mass throws a centrifugal force as it rotates, so the whole drum hammers the ground tens of times each second on top of the static weight pressing down. A Pad Scraper bar rides between the pads to clear soil that would otherwise pack the gaps and turn the drum smooth. The drum rotates on large Drum Bearing trunnions, and a ring of Drum Isolator rubber mounts keeps that violent vibration out of the frame and the operator. Oil Seal sets keep grit out of the bearings.

Frame and articulation

The Articulated Frame is two welded halves. The Front Frame is a yoke that straddles the drum and carries the isolator mounts, while the Rear Frame holds the engine, fuel, and drive axle. The two meet at the Articulation Joint, which combines Pivot Pin steering pins with an Oscillation Bearing that lets the rear frame roll on uneven ground so all four contact points stay loaded. A rear Counterweight balances the heavy drum and keeps weight on the drive wheels for traction. Around the cab sits the ROPS Structure, a certified structure that protects the operator if the machine rolls on a fill slope.

Engine and hydraulics

The Diesel Engine Package package centers on a turbocharged Diesel Engine. Its Engine Block makes the power, a Turbocharger supplies boost for full torque at low speed, and the Injection Pump meters the fuel. A Starter Motor cranks it and an Alternator keeps the battery charged. Heat is shed through the Radiator behind a reversing Cooling Fan that purges chaff, while the Air Cleaner protects the engine from the dust thrown up on a fill. Rather than a mechanical transmission, the engine drives the Hydraulic System. A Propel Pump feeds the travel motors, a Vibration Pump drives the eccentric, and a Steering Pump handles steering and the fan. Oil is held in the Hydraulic Reservoir, routed by the Control Valve, and kept clean by the Hydraulic Filter elements.

Drive and steering

The Drive and Steer System makes the machine self-propelled on rough fill. The Drum Drive uses a high-torque Drum Drive Motor through a Planetary Gearset reduction to turn the drum, which both rolls the machine forward and works the soil. At the back, the Drive Axle adds a second driven point with its own Axle Motor and a Differential feeding the two Drive Wheel tires, so the machine can claw up grades over fifty percent. Two Steering Cylinder rams swing the frame about the articulation joint, giving tight, predictable steering even in soft material.

Cab, controls, and measurement

The operator sits in the Operator Cab on an air Suspension Seat inside the Cab Shell, with HVAC Unit keeping dust out. The Control Console carries the Propel Lever for speed and direction, the Vibration Switch for amplitude, and a Operator Display built on an LCD Panel. Steering runs through the Steering Column and its orbital valve. The Electrical System system, powered by the Battery and run by the Machine Controller, coordinates the engine and drive. Modern machines add a Compaction Meter, an accelerometer on the drum that reads how stiff the soil has become, so the operator can stop rolling when the lift reaches density instead of guessing pass count.

Use and limits

Padfoot compactors do the deep work on earthworks: highway and railway embankments, dam cores, landfill liners, and any large fill made from clay or silt. They are run in lifts of two to three hundred millimetres, with several passes per lift, building density from the bottom up. The kneading action they provide is wasted on clean sand or gravel, where a smooth drum on Drive Wheel traction works better, so contractors match the drum to the soil. Because the pads leave a rough, keyed surface, a padfoot lift bonds well to the next lift, which is why earthworks crews favor them even though a final smooth pass is sometimes needed to seal the top. Their weight, articulated steering, and ability to climb steep fill make them the standard machine for moving and compacting large volumes of cohesive ground.
