Demolition Sorting Grapple

Product

Overview

A demolition sorting grapple is an attachment that turns an excavator into a machine for picking up, sorting, and loading broken material. Where a bucket scoops loose soil, a grapple closes two opposed jaws on irregular objects: chunks of slab, lengths of rebar, brick, timber, pipe, and mixed construction debris. The tined jaws let dirt and fines fall through while holding the bulky pieces, so an operator can separate clean rubble from spoil as the site is cleared. Continuous hydraulic rotation lets the operator twist the jaws to match the angle of whatever is being lifted, which is what makes the tool fast for loading skips and trucks.

The grapple bolts to the excavator through the Main Frame and Hitch, which carries the Clamping Jaw jaws. The Clamp Cylinder Set drives those jaws through the Jaw Pivot, the Hydraulic Rotator spins the whole tool, and the Hydraulic Plumbing feed oil from the carrier. Wear is taken by the Replaceable Teeth and bolt-on plates so the structure lasts.

Frame and mounting

The Main Frame and Hitch is the structural spine. Its Frame Weldment is a box section of high-strength plate that resists the twisting loads when the jaws crush an off-center object. On top sits the Coupler Plate, machined to match the carrier quick coupler so the grapple swaps with the bucket in a few minutes, and a Mounting Pin Set joins the Ear Bracket ears to the stick and the bucket link. The faces that rub against debris carry bolt-on Wear Plate plates of abrasion-resistant steel; when they thin out they are unbolted and replaced rather than the frame being scrapped. A Fastener Set of graded bolts holds the removable parts.

Jaws and teeth

Each Clamping Jaw is a curved Jaw Weldment carrying several Tine fingers. The two jaws are arranged so their tines interlace as they close, which lets the grapple hold a tangle of rebar or a load of rubble without the small pieces slipping out, while still letting soil and fines drop through the gaps. A bolt-on Cutting Edge along the jaw bites into slabs and crops light steel. The tips take the worst abrasion, so the Replaceable Teeth adds replaceable Wear Tooth points held by a Tooth Pin each; the teeth wear out and are knocked off and renewed, sparing the jaw itself. The jaws pivot on bronze Jaw Bushing bushings that are greased and replaced as a service item.

Cylinders and pivot

Force comes from the Clamp Cylinder Set, two double-acting units. Each Hydraulic Cylinder is a honed Cylinder Tube tube with a chromed Piston Rod and a Piston sealed by an O-Ring Set. The rod ends in a Rod Eye clevis, and a Cylinder Guard shields the polished rod from falling material that would score it. The cylinders do not act on the jaws directly: the Jaw Pivot uses a Drive Link on each side and a large Pivot Pin to convert cylinder stroke into the high closing torque needed at the jaw tips. A single Grease Block feeds all the pins from one fitting, so daily greasing is quick.

Rotation and hydraulics

The Hydraulic Rotator gives the grapple its reach into awkward loads. A Rotator Motor drives a Helical Gear Pair against a toothed Slew Bearing, which carries the weight of the grapple and lets it turn endlessly in either direction inside the Rotator Housing. Because the tool spins without limit, oil cannot be carried by fixed hoses across the joint, so a Hydraulic Swivel rotary union passes pressure through to the jaw cylinders. The Hydraulic Plumbing tie the tool to the carrier: a Hose Set runs to flat-face Quick Coupler couplings, a Manifold splits flow evenly to the two cylinders, and a pair of Check Valve valves lock the jaws closed if a hose fails, so a held load cannot drop.

Use and variants

On a demolition site the grapple does the second half of the job. After a breaker or shear reduces a structure to manageable pieces, the grapple sorts the pile: clean concrete to one stockpile for crushing, steel to another for the scrap market, wood and plastic to waste. The same tool then loads the sorted material into trucks. Variants differ mainly in jaw shape and tine count: open tined jaws for bulky mixed debris, closer shells for loose scrap, and orange-peel multi-tine designs for round material. Sizing follows the carrier, since the grapple weight and closing force must suit the excavator so it stays stable and the hydraulics can drive the cylinders. Compared with a fixed grab, the continuous Hydraulic Rotator is the feature that makes a sorting grapple productive, letting one operator place each piece where it belongs without repositioning the machine.
