Crawler Excavator

Overview

A crawler excavator is a tracked machine that digs by pulling a bucket through the ground on the end of a hinged boom and arm. It is the general-purpose digging tool on most construction sites, used for trenching, foundation excavation, loading trucks, grading slopes, demolition, and material handling when fitted with grapples or hammers. The tracks spread its weight so it can work on soft or uneven ground, and the whole upper body rotates a full 360 degrees so the operator can dig on one side and dump on the other without moving the machine.

The excavator is built in two halves joined by a large bearing. The lower half is the Undercarriage, which carries and propels the machine. The upper half is the Upperstructure, a rotating platform that holds the Diesel Engine, the Hydraulic System, the fuel and DEF tanks, the Operator Cab, and a rear Counterweight. The Swing System rotates the upper half on the lower half, and the Front Attachment does the digging.

Engine and emissions

Power comes from a turbocharged diesel Diesel Engine, sized to the flow the hydraulic pumps demand rather than to road speed. Intake air is cleaned by a two-stage Air Cleaner Housing, compressed by the Turbocharger, and cooled by the Charge Air Cooler so more air mass reaches the cylinders. Fuel is metered by a common-rail Fuel Injection System system running near 2000 bar. To meet Stage V and Tier 4 Final limits, the Aftertreatment Module module traps soot in a Diesel Particulate Filter and converts nitrogen oxides over an SCR Catalyst using urea sprayed in by the DEF Dosing Injector. The Cooling Package stacks the radiator, charge-air cooler, and a Hydraulic Oil Cooler behind one hydraulically driven fan that can reverse to clear debris.

Hydraulics

The hydraulic system is the heart of the machine, since every motion except combustion is hydraulic. The engine turns a tandem Main Hydraulic Pump, a variable-displacement axial piston pump whose Swash Plate tilt sets flow. A Pump Regulator on each section reads pilot pressure and trims displacement so the pumps absorb the engine's full power without stalling it, which is how the machine keeps digging force up as load changes. A separate Pilot Gear Pump supplies low-pressure control oil. The Main Control Valve is a stacked bank of spools, one Valve Spool per function, with Relief Valve cartridges capping pressure and Load Check Valve elements holding load when a spool shifts. Operating pressure runs 320 to 380 bar in current machines.

Upperstructure and swing

The Revolving Frame is a heavy welded deck that every upper component bolts to. It rides on a Slewing Ring Bearing, a large internal-gear slewing ring that also carries the digging and tipping loads passed down from the front attachment. A Swing Motor drives the Swing Gearbox, whose Swing Pinion meshes the ring teeth to rotate the house at 7 to 11 rpm. Because the upper body spins continuously, oil reaches the undercarriage through a Center Swivel Joint, a rotary union with stacked port grooves sealed by an Swivel Spindle running inside the Swivel Body. A Swing Parking Brake holds the house still on a slope.

Undercarriage

The Undercarriage is the highest-wear system over the machine's life. Its X-section Track Frame carries two Track Group assemblies. Each track group runs a Track Chain of forged Track Link pieces joined by Track Pin and Track Bushing parts, with Track Shoe (Triple Grouser) grousers bolted on for traction. The chain runs on Track Roller units below and Carrier Roller units above, wraps a Front Idler tensioned by a grease-filled Track Adjuster, and is driven by a Drive Sprocket. Each side is powered by a two-speed Travel Drive Motor with a built-in Travel Reduction Gear gear and a spring-applied Travel Parking Brake.

Front attachment and digging

The working tool is the Front Attachment: a Boom, an Arm (Stick), and a Bucket, all welded from high-strength steel. Two Boom Cylinder units raise the boom, one Arm Cylinder crowds the arm, and one Bucket Cylinder curls the bucket through the Bucket Linkage, whose H-Link and Idler Link multiply breakout force. The bucket itself is a Bucket Shell of abrasion-resistant plate fitted with replaceable Bucket Tooth points. Every joint pivots on a greased Pivot Pin with a hardened bushing.

Cab and electrical

The operator works from a Operator Cab built to ROPS and FOPS standards, with a suspension Operator Seat, two pilot Pilot Joystick consoles, Travel Pedal controls for the tracks, a color Display Panel, and an Cab HVAC Unit unit. The 24 V Electrical System starts and charges the engine and runs the Engine and Machine Controller, which reads the joysticks and pressure sensors and commands pump displacement, fan speed, and engine fueling. Daily service covers engine oil, coolant, hydraulic level, track tension, and the condition of the bucket teeth, with pin and bushing wear driving the largest scheduled undercarriage costs.
