Gravel Road Grader

Product

Overview

A gravel road grader, more formally a motor grader, is the machine that keeps unpaved roads usable. Gravel roads wear into ruts, potholes, and a flat or dished cross section that traps water, and a grader fixes all of these by cutting the high spots, filling the low ones, and reshaping the surface into a crown that sheds rain to the ditches. It does this with a long curved blade slung under the middle of the machine, positioned by a set of hydraulic cylinders that let the operator place the cutting edge at almost any height, angle, and bank. The long wheelbase is what makes a grader cut a smooth profile rather than following the bumps the way a short machine would.

The machine is built around an Articulated Frame that bends in the middle, a Moldboard and Circle that does the cutting, a Drawbar and Lift that pulls it, a leaning Front Steer Axle, a Rear Tandem Drive rear drive, a Engine and Transmission, a Hydraulic System system, and a Operator Cab where one operator manages it all.

The blade and circle

The Moldboard and Circle is what shapes the road. Its Moldboard Blade is a curved steel plate that cuts material, rolls it along the face, and casts it to one side, protected by a replaceable Cutting Edge and End Bit corners that take the abrasion and are swapped when worn. The blade hangs from a Blade Circle, a large toothed ring turned by the Circle Drive so the operator can set the blade at any angle across the road, even reversed. A pair of Blade Lift Cylinder units raise, lower, and tilt the two ends independently, and a Sideshift Cylinder shifts the whole blade sideways to reach a ditch slope beyond the wheels. This freedom of motion is why a grader can cut a ditch, build a crown, or feather a windrow with the same tool.

Drawbar, articulation, and steering

The blade is pulled through the ground, and that pull is taken by the Drawbar and Lift. Its Drawbar Frame connects the circle to the front of the machine through a Drawbar Ball Socket that lets it swing freely, while Lift Link links tie it to the blade cylinders. The whole machine bends at the Articulation Joint under the push of Articulation Cylinder cylinders, so the rear wheels can track beside the front ones and keep the machine out of the fresh cut. Side load from the angled blade tries to push the front end off line, so the Front Steer Axle can lean its wheels with a Wheel Lean Cylinder to lean into that thrust and hold a straight cut.

Drive and power

Traction on loose gravel comes from the Rear Tandem Drive. Two driven axles sit in walking Tandem Case boxes joined by Tandem Chain chains, so each side has two wheels that share load and climb over bumps without losing grip, each driven through a Final Drive planetary reduction. Power comes from the Engine and Transmission: a Diesel Engine diesel feeds a Powershift Transmission powershift that holds a steady grading speed under varying blade load, with a Cooling Package package keeping the engine, transmission, and hydraulic oil in range.

Hydraulics and control

Grading often means moving several blade functions at once, raising one end while angling and shifting, so the Hydraulic System system is sized for simultaneous demand. A load-sensing Hydraulic Pump supplies a Control Valve Bank whose Valve Spool valves meter oil to each cylinder in proportion to how far the operator moves a lever, with a Relief Valve capping pressure. Oil is held and cleaned by the Hydraulic Tank and Hydraulic Filter units. The operator works from the Operator Cab, a ROPS shell with a swivel Operator Seat and a Control Console of Control Lever controls, watching engine and grade data on the Operator Display.

In service

A typical pass starts by cutting loose material from the road shoulder and ruts, rolling it toward the centre to fill the low spots, then making a finishing pass that lays a smooth crown sloping a few percent to each side so water runs off rather than soaking in. Skilled operators read the road and adjust blade angle and bank continuously, which is why the controls are arranged for fast, fine changes. Larger machines add grade-control sensors that hold the cutting edge to a survey profile automatically, but on most gravel roads the work is done by feel, with the grader reshaping a length of road in a few passes before moving on.
